dominated at 1,600 meters throughout the girls' track and field postseason. It was her best event, and she ranked fourth in the state.

But in the back of her mind, she thought that she could be even better at 3,200 - but she'd know because running the 1,600 always left her fatigued heading into the longer race.

So she took a chance and dropped the 1,600 for Friday's Southern Section Masters Meet despite having the top qualifying mark.

The gamble paid off, as Murakami improved her personal best by 12 seconds to win the 3,200 title in 10:34.75 at Cerritos College Cerritos College is a public comprehensive community college founded in 1955 located in Norwalk, California. ``I'm so happy I dropped the 1,600,'' said Murakami, who was the top qualifier qual·i·fi·er

in the event. ``I know I probably would have won it, but (the 3,200) is harder for me, so it feels like more of an accomplishment. It worked out great.''

Jared Bell entered the final lap There is also Final Lap (novel), a novel in the Traces series by Malcolm Rose.

of the boys' 1,600 with last year's Masters Meet in his memory. The Harvard- Westlake of Studio City runner didn't want to miss out on a trip to the state championships with another bad final lap.

This time, things were very different.

Bell moved from third to first in the final 300 meters, improving his personal best by more than three seconds with a 4:10.17 to win in a surprise.

``The conditions were perfect, and I had confidence in all the training I've been doing in preparation for this,'' Bell said. ``I was thinking about the disappointment from last year at this meet, how I faded in the final 200 meters. That kept me working.''

Bell was in fifth place midway through the final lap last year but fell back in the pack.

The top five finishers in each event advanced to the state prelims Friday in Sacramento.

Rodney Glass from Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks set a personal record in the 100 meters, winning in 10.51. His momentum carried him just off the track, where he twisted his ankle on the concrete step that separates the track from the grass.

The injury slowed Glass in the 200 meters, and he failed to qualify after entering with the second-best time.

``This is a big disappointment, because I thought I could do best in the 200 at state,'' Glass said. ``My whole day is shot now. It just doesn't feel right after this race.''

Glass helped Notre Dame to a stunning win in the 400-meter relay, the first time the Knights have beaten sprint powerhouse A fourth-generation language from Cognos that was introduced in the late 1970s for midrange computers. Louisville of Woodland Hills' Elizabeth Olear had disappointing races, although she qualified in the 100 (third, 11.82) and 200 (second, 23.93).

``When warming up, I can feel if my legs are right and it always shows up in the races,'' said Olear, who tweaked See tweak.  her hamstring hamstring /ham·string/ (ham´string) one of the tendons bounding the popliteal space laterally and medially.

Anna Farias-Eisner from Harvard-Westlake joined Olear as the night's only double qualifiers, making it in the 800 and 3,200. Jeanne Newman from Moorpark was a surprising qualifier, taking fifth in the 200 meters after entering with the ninth-best time.
