SO. SECTION DIVISION XIII: GRACE BRETHREN UNABLE TO END SEASON WITH TITLE PAS. POLY 14, GRACE BRE. 7.

Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer

MOORPARK - Grace Brethren coach Dennis Stephenson was concerned about Pasadena Poly's big- play offense, and the visiting Panthers showed plenty of that in Saturday's Division XIII final at Moorpark High.

But Poly, which got touchdown-sparking first-half runs of 64 and 32 yards from injury replacement John Clark John Clark is the name of:
  • John Clark (actor/director) (born 1932), ex-husband of Lynn Redgrave
  • John Clark (governor) (1761-1821), American farmer and governor of Delaware
  • John Clark (Georgia governor) (1766-1832), American politician and governor of Georgia
(a game-high 169 yards rushing) and a 41-yard scoring pass from Jurdie Gaffney (109 yards passing), also showed up with plenty of defense.

The fourth-seeded Panthers (11-2) shut down Grace Brethren's bread-and-butter running game in the first half, then withstood junior quarterback Eric Durso's season-best 182 yards passing to post a 14-7 victory over the Lancers lanc·er

, who were playing in their third section final in four years.

Despite the loss, this was a step up for the 235-student Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  private school, which had played until this season in the eight-man ranks - winning one title in 1999 and finishing second last year.

The extent of the Lancers' football progress shows nowhere more than in a count of the school's assistant coaches, 12, which is four more than the school had football players in 1992, its first season of eight-man ball, when an injury forced a cancellation of the season.

This season, 50 of the 70 boys in the four-year school played football, and their efforts lifted the Lancers to wins over No. 3-seeded Rio Hondo Rio Hondo may refer to:

  • Rio Hondo (Belize), a river which forms much of the border between Belize and Mexico.
  • Rio Hondo (California), a tributary of the Los Angeles River in the U.S. state of California.

They came up short against the Panthers but not without some big plays - notably a brilliant leaping second-half touchdown reception by season rushing leader Chad Chad (chăd, chäd), Fr. The Lancers also got two interceptions and a blocked punt from a team that included 15 underclassmen.

``Poly stopped our running game tonight, and that was something that got us here,'' said Stephenson, whose Lancers were held to 47 yards rushing - most of that in the first half - before going to the pass in the second half.
