A MIRADA - The emotions between two schools separated by less than five miles bubbled over. But it was Oaks Christian High of Westlake Village seizing the moment.

For a brief moment in the second half, Oaks Christian was on the brink of settling for second place. Oak Park held a 1-0 lead with just under 20 minutes remaining, and the Lions lost both of their Loriers in the same sequence. Defender Kim Lorier was knocked out of the game with a head injury.

``We tried not to let it affect us too much because if we get out of our game, it will affect us for the worst,'' Oaks Christian forward Alysha Hoven said. ``We tried to stay pretty focused with all the cards going around.''

And the Lions wasted little time feeding off the intensity sparked by the incident. On a throw-in from Hannah Fries, Hoven controlled the ball almost 40 yards from the goal. The left-footed junior sent a soaring shot toward the goal that Eagles keeper Krista Clinton couldn't reach.

Oaks Christian remained tied through the final 10 minutes down one player after Alena Avedissian was red-carded.

``It was a very emotional game. Just the fact that we knew each other so much,'' Crane said. ``That was an extremely important goal. And if that wouldn't have happened, who knows where we would have been?''
