SO. SECTION DIVISION I: NO MORE MIRACLES FOR LOYOLA LOS ALAMITOS 31, LOYOLA 7.

Byline: Dave Desmond Special to the Daily News

ANAHEIM - Maybe Los Alamitos Los Alamitos (lôs ăləmē`təs, lŏs), city (1990 pop. 11,676), Orange co., NE of Long Beach, S Calif., in a suburban area; inc. 1960. Los Alamitos Racetrack and U.S. military installations are nearby.  High was too good. Maybe Loyola ran out of gas after an impressive run through the playoffs. Perhaps Edison Field just ran out of miracles "Of Miracles" is the title of Section X of David Hume's An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding (1748). The text

Loyola, the gutty team that regrouped from a fourth-place finish in the Serra League to advance to Saturday's Southern Section Div. I football semifinals, couldn't match the power and finesse of the nation's No. 11 team and fell 31-7 before more than 9,000.

Inspired by the miracles performed on the same field by the Anaheim Angels, Loyola was further buoyed by Mater Dei Mater Dei is Latin for "Mother of God", referring to the Virgin Mary. The term has been used to name various institutions, often Catholic, including:
  • Mater Dei Catholic College, Wagga Wagga
  • Mater Dei College, Western Australia

But second-seeded Los Alamitos (12-1) made it clear very early it wasn't going to participate in a double-header of upsets.

The Griffins stuffed Loyola's running game, took a quick 14-0 lead and rolled to their first championship-game appearance since 1993.

Renaud finished the season with 1,869 yards and 22 touchdowns.

There were few highlights for the Cubs (9-4), who were attempting to reach the final for the 11th time. C.J. Wellington's 10-yard touchdown reception from Scott Deke deke

late in the second quarter gave Loyola a brief look at the game at 14-7. But Los Alamitos answered with 17 second-half points and didn't allow Loyola inside the Los Alamitos 48-yard line after intermission.

Deke completed 15 of 30 passes for 175 of Loyola's 248 total yards.

Los Alamitos, which plays Mater Dei next Saturday for the title at Edison Field, had too many weapons.

Jeff Kline completed 9 of 19 passes for 157 yards, including touchdowns of 26 and 40 yards to Brandon Mandas.

Ryan Bagley rushed for 88 yards on 13 carries. Randy Estes added 61 yards on nine carries, including a 2-yard touchdown run. Kline rushed for 48 yards and scored on a 7-yard run.
