Paraclete keeper Kyle Burkhardt, who had recorded 20 shutouts this season, had not allowed a goal in the four playoff matches heading into the final.

``It was a good goal,'' Burkhardt said. ``There was no way I could get to it. Both the teams were so evenly matched at least they had to work for it.''

Second-seeded Salesian (23-3-2) controlled the field for much of the first half against top-seeded Paraclete (22-6-4), but there were few opportunities in the second half until Diaz's score.

Diaz, a junior who finished with a goal in Salesian's last four playoff victories, took a crossing pass from David Mora MORA, In civil law. Paraclete narrowly missed sending the game into overtime in the 78th minute when Andrew Hernandez's high-arching penalty kick from 30 yards bounced off the top of the crossbar.

``I just kicked the shot and it seemed like it was in slow motion,'' Hernandez said. ``I didn't hit it well enough and that's just the way the game goes.''

Paraclete's other second-half scoring opportunity came two minutes after Salesian's score when Elliot Hernandez enticed Salesian keeper Bobby Rodriguez out of the box, but Rodriguez smothered smoth·er

``Anybody who loses to somebody wants revenge,'' Hernandez said. ``They got the break this year. I am already looking forward to next year. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Against a Paraclete lineup with three starting freshmen, Salesian had a 7-2 advantage in shots in the first half. The teams played evenly in the second half with two shots apiece.

``It was going to come down to which team made a mistake,'' Paraclete coach Patrick McIver said. ``They capitalized on ours and we didn't. It hurts but the players knew what it felt like. Next year, we have to do it again to try two out of three.''

--A goal in the 66th minute ends Paraclete's bid to repeat as Southern Section boys' soccer champion.
