SO. SECTION DIV. II: HART RETURNS TO FINALE HOWELL'S TD RUN PUTS GAME AWAY HART 35, SAN CLEMENTE 21.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

Three weeks into the season, Hart High looked like it needed a defibrillator defibrillator, device that delivers an electrical shock to the heart in order to stop certain forms of rapid heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias). The shock changes a fibrillation to an organized rhythm or changes a very rapid and ineffective cardiac rhythm to a .

The team was winless, the defense porous and nerves were on edge. The area's most successful high school football program for more than a decade was dangerously close to digging itself in too big a hole.

Nothing has been easy for Hart of Newhall all season, so it was no surprise that Hart needed a 29-yard touchdown run from Dan Howell late in the fourth quarter Saturday to put away San Clemente San Clemente (săn klĭmĕn`tē), city (1990 pop. 41,100), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; inc. 1928. ``It's been a remarkable journey,'' said Howell, who scored four touchdowns and rushed for 139 yards on 19 carries. ``Zero and three is ugly. That's not Hart football. When you start off the season 0-3, of course you are concerned. It gets real scary.''

Despite the season-long uncertainty, Hart advanced to a Southern Section title game for the sixth consecutive year. The season is finishing the same as last year, with Hart beating San Clemente in the semifinals (last year it was 24-17) to play Mission Viejo Mission Vi·e·jo

Hart won titles in Div. III four years in a row before moving up to Div. II last season and finishing as the runner-up.

``It takes a lot of heart to go back to the championship game,'' said Sean Norton, who passed for 289 yards to break the school record for career passing yards, moving past Kyle Matter. ``It started out real rough but pulled it together, turned it around and are definitely looking better now.''

With Norton throwing two costly interceptions in the first half, it was Howell who kept the Indians even.

Howell rushed five times for 28 yards, punching it in by carrying two defenders into the end zone on a 1-yard run to tie the game midway through the second quarter.

Then Howell grabbed Hart its first lead of the game early in the third quarter, taking advantage of a bad punt by San Clemente and a 27-yard pass from Norton to Kevin Ciccone to score from 13 yards.

San Clemente (9-4) quickly answered, converting on a fourth-and-6 before Cole Bergquist found Frank Guzman on a 10-yard touchdown.

Hart broke the tie again on its next possession. Ryan Wolfe Ryan Wolfe is a fictional character in the show , portrayed by American actor Jonathan Togo. Characterization

After San Clemente pulled within 27-21, Howell scored on the 29-yard run with 2:51 remaining. He then stuffed Bergquist at the goal line with 1:22 remaining to seal the deal.
