SO. SECTION BOYS DIV. I: QUARTZ HILL ROLLS TOWARD BERTH IN FINAL REBELS (28-0-1) SURPRISE MILLIKAN IN OVERTIME QUARTZ HILL 1, MILLIKAN 0.

Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill spent much of its boys' soccer season waiting. Each win was only so meaningful, continuing an undefeated season without bringing the Rebels' respect.

Tuesday finally brought the championship atmosphere for which Quartz Hill has been longing. A home crowd of about 1,000 cheered on the Rebels. The final whistle A simple whistle is a woodwind instrument which produces sound from a stream of forced air.

But the season isn't over yet. The Rebels have one game left, which is the best part.

Quartz Hill (28-0-1), seeded No. 2 in Division I and top-ranked by the Daily News, had a lot of obstacles to overcome this season in order to be taken seriously as a soccer power.  and playing what many considered a weak schedule didn't help. The Rebels also moved up from Division II to Division I. After beating the defending Division I champions, there is little left for doubters.

``We just put every critic to shame,'' senior goalkeeper Ian McClung said. ``This game puts to rest the notion that we excelled because of a weak schedule and wouldn't be able to compete with the big teams.''

Quartz Hill dominated the first period, missing on excellent chances, and appeared ready to break through. However, some halftime adjustments by No. 3 seed Millikan (24-3-4) seemed to frustrate the Rebels.

``We came out and played our game,'' Angelillo said. ``But they got us playing their game in the second half. We can't match up with them physically, so we have to use our athleticism.''

Millikan had most of the opportunities in the second half, the best coming with a few minutes left in the first 10-minute overtime. McClung dived to stop a shot by Millikan forward Agustin Nunez. The ball bounced away to Millikan midfielder

``Truthfully, that's the one good save I had all year,'' McClung said. ``I haven't been challenged much, so this was a chance to prove myself.''

``I think that was the turning point for us,'' Quartz Hill coach Andre Matalon said. ``Emotionally, that got us back into the game.''

The Rams didn't know what to think about Quartz Hill heading into the game. The teams had no common opponents and never had played each other.

``They're a good team,'' said Millikan coach Rod Petkovic. ``Maybe not as good as some teams we've played this year, but they have a strong team and deserve to be in the final.''
