SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Upset-minded Hart High of Newhall had its chances to unseat top-seeded Riverside Poly in the Southern Section Div. I baseball quarterfinals Friday.

But the key hit at the right time never materialized in a 4-3 loss in eight innings before a breathless but disappointed overflow crowd at Hart.

Hart (19-9-1) loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning with its top slugger, Shane Carlson, at the plate. Carlson, a UC Santa Barbara-bound senior whose 48 hits are two shy of Hart's single-season record, popped a 3-1 fastball to center for the third out.

Riverside Poly the scored the go-ahead run against reliever Donny Williams (4-3) in the top of the eighth on two errors and Mike O'Neil's sacrifice fly. Hart put a runner in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on  with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but Hector Rabago (6-1) struck out Ryan Pettersen and Patrick Sarkissian to end the game.

Hart's Tyler Fick hit a two-run home run in the first inning and pitched seven strong innings, allowing three earned runs earned run

''But everyone played their heart out, and I don't think any of us would have done anything differently.''

Rabago turned in a stellar performance, pitching seven relief innings - the first six without giving up a hit - while allowing one single and striking out 10.

``Hart was a tough team, but I never really felt pressured,'' Rabago said. ``I like to be challenged like that. It makes me a better pitcher.''

Rabago, a junior who has committed to USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , used a combination of sharp breaking pitches and a lively fastball to keep Hart's hitters off-balance.

``He's got good stuff and he throws a lot of quick pitches,'' Fick said. ``He doesn't give you much time to get ready, and he doesn't give you much to hit.''
