MANHATTAN BEACH Manhattan Beach, city (1990 pop. 32,063), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1912. It is a residential and beach community with an oil refinery and nearby factories that produce transportation and electrical equipment, computers, and pottery.  - There was enough dirt on K.C. Croal's face and jersey to plant flowers in a testament to how hard Croal and his Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  High teammates had to work Friday night to slow down the high-powered Mira Costa offense.

The Mustangs of Manhattan Beach came in undefeated and averaging 30 points per game, but the Knights of Sherman Oaks prevailed, as Croal's interception with two minutes remaining clinched a 21-13 victory at Mira Costa High.

Fourth-seeded Notre Dame (11-2) will attempt to defend its Southern Section Div. III championship Saturday at the Home Depot The Home Depot (NYSE: HD) is an American retailer of home improvement and construction products and services.

``People had been talking about our run defense not being as good as usual, so we knew we had to step things up,'' Croal said.

The Knights held the Mustangs (12-1) to 124 rushing yards, but their biggest play came on pass defense, with Mira Costa driving for a possible game-tying touchdown.

A Notre Dame punt gave Mira Costa the ball on its own 12 with 2:50 remaining. Two completions moved the ball to the Mira Costa 37, but that's when Croal stepped in front of an attempt from Brian Seidensticker for an interception.

``I started out after the receiver,'' Croal said, ``but then I looked at the quarterback's eyes and figured that he was going over the middle.''

No Mira Costa running back gained more than 50 yards, which forced the Mustangs to turn to the pass. Seidensticker completed 9 of 19 attempts for 128 yards and threw two costly interceptions in the second half.

``We hadn't been fundamentally sound on run defense in the last couple weeks, and we needed to get back to that,'' Notre Dame coach Kevin Rooney Kevin Rooney born on May 4, 1956 in Catskill, NY and is a boxing trainer and former boxer. Amateur Boxing Career

Notre Dame put up a strong offense showing, considering that only three of Mira Costa's 12 previous opponents scored more than 14 points against the Mustangs.

Not surprisingly, the Knights focused on the run, and as they protected the lead in the second half, the ball rarely left the hands of quarterback Garrett Green.

Green, a sophomore first-year starter, didn't turn the ball over and more than made up for his paltry pal·try

The Knights succeeded on option and draw plays, and Green ran 18 times for 92 yards. Notre Dame also featured its regular running-back tandem of Cary Harris (12 carries for 84 yards) and Brandon Clayton (14 carries for 63 yards and two touchdowns).

Notre Dame took a 7-0 lead on its first possession, an eight-play, 99- yard drive capped by Green's 9-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Killian. Mira Costa tied the game on its next drive, on a 17-yard pass from Seidensticker to Kyle Darr. The Knights took the lead for good with 27 seconds remaining in the first half on a 1-yard run by Clayton.
