its first loss in three years in Friday night's Southern Section Div. II playoff semifinal, the Cowboys would have had to be perfect.

By the end of the first half, when the home fans started the slow trickle to the parking lot, the verdict was in: Canyon was far from perfect on the night it mattered most.

Senior quarterback Nate Longshore Nate Longshore (born June 30, 1986 in Canyon Country, California, U.S.) is an American football quarterback for the California Golden Bears. Longshore was an Elite-11 quarterback in high school and a 4-star recruit rated by Rivals.com and Scout.com."How Far ...  threw four first-half interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns, as the Cowboys turned over the ball five times before halftime and lost 56-21 to the Diablos.

Longshore completed 23 of 36 passes for 207 yards but clearly was bothered by the hamstring injury hamstring injury Sports medicine A muscle injury of biceps femoris, seen in sprinters and runners, when a contracted muscle meets a lengthening force, overpowering intrinsic muscle resiliency Management RICE, NSAIDs, gradual ↑ of pain-free activity–eg,  he suffered in the quarterfinals. Longshore was removed late in the third quarter with Mission Viejo leading 56-7.

``That's not a valid excuse,'' Longshore said of the injury. ``I just wasn't competing well enough.''

One bright spot came on the opening drive as Canyon senior Sean Coen became just the second player from the area in history with 100 receptions in a season. Coen finished with nine catches for 78 yards, and 108 receptions for the year.

Senior running back Louis Montano played until the end and finished with 124 yards on 26 carries. Tim Naillieux caught a career-high 12 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown in the losing effort.

To add insult to injury, Canyon (11-2) forced three Mission Viejo turnovers in the fourth quarter. But it was too little, too late. The Cowboys outgained the Diablos 431-347 in the game.

Mission Viejo, the two-time defending champions, advanced to play the winner of Saturday night's semifinal between Hart of Newhall and San Clemente San Clemente (săn klĭmĕn`tē), city (1990 pop. 41,100), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; inc. 1928. Canyon hardly could have gotten off to a worse start. Mission Viejo marched 70 yards in 10 plays on its first drive, capped by Jedidiah Collins' 6-yard touchdown catch to make it 7-0. Then disaster struck for the Cowboys - again and again.
