Everyone wants to be a millionaire.'' She's not alone. Millions of Californians - either on their own or through office pools - were buying tickets Thursday after the jackpot soared past $30 million the night before. With nobody winning the $36 million jackpot in Wednesday's drawing, ticket buying is expected to surge until the cutoff 15 minutes before the final drawing at 8 p.m. Saturday. The $55 million is currently the largest single-state lottery jackpot in the nation. ``The bigger the jackpot, the more you will invest, the more tickets you buy,'' said Alvaro Selga of Reseda, who bought five of the $1 tickets Thursday. The largest California Lottery jackpot was $118.8 million, won by 54 people holding 10 winning tickets in April 1991. Salvador Gonzalez of Anaheim won the highest individual jackpot of $87 million in June of last year. Given the growing jackpot, those buying tickets Thursday said they had a better chance of winning a million dollars buying lottery tickets than by going on any of the ``be-a-millionaire'' game shows popping up on television. ``I don't need all of (the $55 million). I just need a portion of it,'' said Bonnie bon·ny also bon·nie adj. bon·ni·er, bon·ni·est Scots 1. Physically attractive or appealing; pretty. 2. Excellent. Ricky Warner said winning even a share of $55 million is more money than he could imagine having. He keeps trying to win ``a little something'' and buys tickets on his own and through office pools at Holga Metal Furniture in Van Nuys. ``I'm not into the millionaire shows. The lotto is more fun,'' said Warner, a Van Nuys resident. ``Your odds are better with the dumb DEAF, DUMB, AND BLIND. A man born deaf, dumb, and blind, is considered an idiot. (q.v.) 1 Bl. Warner spent more on tickets this week to keep up with the other players. ``When the jackpot gets to $35 million, everyone shoves in five dollars or more.'' The taste of winning, even $175 split among co-workers in December, keeps the office pool going at Studio City Dental Group. ``It was very disappointing not to win Wednesday. Hopefully, our chances will be good Saturday,'' said Anna Tovar, a receptionist for the dental group. ``That's why we keep playing.'' A single jackpot winner of $55 million would receive 26 annual payments with the first totaling nearly $1.4 million and the last totaling about $2.8 million before taxes, officials said. The estimated cash value would equal about half of the jackpot. The $27 million is the amount the lottery would invest to pay the jackpot prize over 26 years, officials said. A $27 million payday might sound like a lot, but experienced lotto players know it takes a lot of millions to make an office pool happy. In fact, at the restaurant where Reece works, the co-workers don't even bother with the lotto until it gets big. ``It has to be a big jackpot for us to play,'' Reece said. ``Anything under $25 million wouldn't be enough for us to quit our jobs.''
