SO FAR, NEW COLLEGE SITCOM'S HIT STATUS IS 'UNDECLARED'.

Byline: - David Kronke

TWO YEARS AGO at this time, a critically acclaimed but viewer-impaired series called ``Freaks and Geeks'' was facing the ax at NBC NBC

for its inspired casting and was nominated - twice - for its brilliant scripting.

This year, ``Undeclared'' - from one of ``F&G's'' creators, Judd Apatow - is likewise facing audience rejection despite critical favor (it's positioned after the far loopier ``That '70s Show That '70s Show is an American television sitcom that centers on the lives of a group of teenagers living in Point Place, Wisconsin, a fictional suburb of either Kenosha or Green Bay<ref name="That'70sShowFAQs"/> from May 17, 1976 to December 31, 1979. ,'' obviously not a good fit for such a smart, subtle series). Tonight, the first of its last two episodes debuts, and again, both episodes are really wonderful, particularly when measured against other shows attempting to make their mark this week.

``Undeclared'' has, not incorrectly, been described as ``Freaks and Geeks Freaks and Geeks is an American television series, created by Paul Feig and produced by Judd Apatow, that aired on NBC during the 1999–2000 TV season. Tuesday night, geeky Steven's (Jay Baruchel) even geekier single dad (Loudon Wainwright) finds a very dubious reservoir of romance, to the consternation of the entire dorm floor. Next week, Steven is torn between his pals' love of porn and his girlfriend Lizzie's (Carla Gallo) disastrous decision to change her appearance, while her doofy ex-boyfriend and his coterie plan another ill-advised assault on her affections.

The supporting cast (including Charlie Hunnam, Timm Sharp, Monica Keener and Seth Rogan, who also writes for the series) are as sharp and as funny as ever, and both episodes boast not just laughs but surprisingly emotional moments that force viewers to sit up and take notice. Gallo's ultimate makeover is pretty hot, promising good things for Fox if the network demonstrates a modicum mod·i·cum
