Rain wreaked its usual havoc through the Southland on Tuesday, but evening commuters on the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. It is signed as California State Highway 14 along its length. It connects Greater Los Angeles to the rapidly developing Antelope Valley.  got a more unexpected surprise - heavy snow that closed the freeway for about three hours.

The Antelope Valley

Traffic backed up for miles after the 7:30 p.m. freeway closure, as up to six inches of snow stuck to the roadway, Dibene said.

Hail the size of BB pellets was reported in Malibu and even waterspouts were spotted in the Southland on Tuesday. Scattered showers and frigid temperatures were expected on and off through the weekend.

``It's a little unusual to be getting this storm and then a couple more this late in the season,'' said David Gomberg, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

Weather specialists predict a 50 percent chance of scattered rain this morning, with temperatures dipping into the low 40s and highs in the 50s, Gomberg said. This afternoon will be partly cloudy with no rain in the forecast.

Residents will see relief Thursday, with no chance for rain and temperatures warming to the lower 60s. But that may not last for long - with chances for showers Friday through Monday, officials said.

Normally, Southland temperatures should be in the 70s at this time of year, said Laura Anderson, senior meteorologist for AccuWeather in State College, Pa.

Snow levels were expected to lower to the 2,500-foot level early this morning, with a heavy snow warning

Several waterspouts were seen over Huntington and Sunset beaches in Orange County and another in Palos Verdes, meteorologists said. No injuries or damage were reported during the events.

Snow along the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Originally built as U.S. Highway 99, it was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964.  just north of Highway 138 through the Grapevine forced the California Highway Patrol to escort traffic through the area.
