SNOW CLOTHES GO LIGHT.

Byline: Bill Becher Special to the Daily News

Take it off. Not all off, just a layer, say outdoor clothing makers.

After years of advice from experts to dress in multiple layers, outdoor enthusiasts are trying garments that combine several functions in a single layer.

Companies are offering more versatile clothing using new fabrics that provide the warmth of fleece in a stretchy stretch·y

On a recent day skiing in the Sierra, I tried the REI One jacket and pants.

A nice feature of the jacket is the soft fleece-lined collar that adds a bit of cozy See COSE.  to an otherwise functional jacket. The REI One Jacket and pants are made out of Polartec Power Shield, a new fabric designed to stretch, repel re·pel

The One Jacket has a trim but not uncomfortable fit. The breathable breath·a·ble

legs to fit over boots. A nice touch is an extra zippered pocket on one leg that can hold an avalanche beacon or your cell phone if you just have to check in with your loved one before trying the Wipe Out Chutes.

Another name for the jacket and pants could be the REI 90 Percent, because that's about how much of the time they will work for you, unless you winter in Antarctica.

The 10 percent of the time when the wind is ripping the snow off Cornice cornice (kôr`nĭs), molded or decorated projection that forms the crowning feature at the top of a building wall or other architectural element; specifically, the uppermost of the three principal members of the classic entablature, hence by  and the temps are below zero you will need more layers underneath. If it's spitting rain in Seattle you will want to add an outer shell. REI suggests their Ultra Light jacket.

Still 90 percent has to be worth an ``A.''
