A brief history of Kagan

Paul Kagan founded Kagan Research in 1969 and the Californian quickly became the dominant publisher in the cable TV field, producing such newsletters as Cable TV Advertising, Cable TV Finance, Cable TV Law Reporter, and Cable Program Investor--each selling for around $1,000/year. In his book, Publishing Newsletters, Howard Hudson cited Kagan as a pioneer of spin-off The situation that arises when a parent corporation organizes a subsidiary corporation, to which it transfers a portion of its assets in exchange for all of the subsidiary's capital stock, which is subsequently transferred to the parent corporation's shareholders.  newsletters, slicing the cable industry finer and finer with targeted titles.

Primedia acquired Kagan from the founder in late 2000 but sold it to MCG Capital in March 2004. At the time Kagan was publishing more than 40 newsletters and databases covering the cable, broadcast, motion picture, home video, newspaper, and wireless industries.

Tim Baskerville

MCG promptly hired Tim Baskerville as publisher of the Kagan operation, still based in California. At the time, Tim had sold the latest of his California- and London-based companies covering the communications industry communications industry, broadly defined, the business of conveying information. Although communication by means of symbols and gestures dates to the beginning of human history, the term generally refers to mass communications. . He later told NL/NL that when MCG called, he was "sitting by the side of the road." He continued: "MCG is a business development company, a sort of odd financial bird. They serve as a sort of virtual bank making loans and acquiring equity in media companies."

In March 2006, MCG acquired JupiterResearch from Jupiter Media Corp. and formed JupiterKagan Inc. Kagan Research became a subsidiary. In addition to its newsletters, a larger part of the company produced "data books, massive tomes of industry statistics," Tim told us in 2005. "We currently publish about 45 of those a year."

"Kagan is also unusual in that we earn a significant amount of income from consulting, things like appraisals and appearing as expert witnesses."

As CEO of JupiterKagan, consulting appears to be a big part of Tim's future. He says he "will no longer maintain an office at the Kagan Research facility in Monterey. I am still living in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , where I spend most of my time, and when in New York New York, state, United States
