SAN FRANCISCO -- The Storage Networking Industry Association An association of producers and consumers of storage networking products, whose goal is to further storage networking technology and applications. The Storage Networking Industry Association, or SNIA  (SNIA) today announced that its five specifications and standards have each continued to receive increased industry adoption and development momentum throughout 2006. Highlighting the industry's adoption of the Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S), more than 450 products from 24 companies have now passed the SNIA Conformance Testing Program The Storage Networking Industry Association's Conformance Testing Program (SNIA-CTP) is an integral step towards bringing third party standards conformance to the storage networking marketplace.  (SNIA-CTP SNIA-CTP Storage Network Industry Association-Conformance Testing Program ) since its inception in the spring of 2004.

"We are happy to report that SMI-S continues to receive strong support from the industry as its development and expansion within the SNIA accelerates," said Wayne M. Adams, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the SNIA. "At the same time, we are very proud of the fact that the MultiPath Management API has become the second SNIA standard to be approved by INCITS INCITS INternational Committee for Information Technology Standards  under its 'Fast Track' program for ANSI approval. The ongoing support from the industry, combined with the ongoing development across all of our specifications and standards is a strong sign that the industry is committed to delivering higher levels of open interoperability between storage hardware and software."

John Webster, Principal IT Advisor of Illumata also stated, "Interoperability issues have long stood in the way of new product adoption by networked storage users. Continued progress toward the establishment and vendor implementation of open standards benefits both users and vendors."

SMI-S:

The SMI-S, which was created to develop and standardize interoperable storage management technologies will be highlighted throughout the SNIA's activities at Storage Networking World Storage Networking World (commonly called SNW) is a for data storage professionals in the United States. Sponsored by Computerworld and the Storage Networking Industry Association, SNW is held twice each year.  Fall 2006 in Orlando, FL.

Several new features such as host-based controllers, storage enclosures, support for file system quotas, volume protection and consistency management for snapshot and replication management support are being added with the coming development of SMI-S version 1.2.

Additionally, the SMI-S standard continues to progress as version 1.2 is planned for submission to INCITS for review in early 2007.

Announced today, the SNIA specification for MultiPath Management API (MMA) has been approved by the InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards The International Committee for Information Technology Standards, or INCITS (pronounced "insights" [1]), is an ANSI-accredited forum of IT developers. It was formerly known as the X3 and NCITS.  (INCITS) as a new American National Standard (standard) American National Standard - (ANS) A common prefix for ANSI documents or standards, e.g.: "ANS Forth", or "American National Standard X3.215-1994". . The standard has been designated as the American National Standard for Information Technology - SNIA MultiPath Management API Specification (ANSI INCITS 412-2006).

The SNIA's iSCSI Management API The SNIA iSCSI Management API (IMA) manages iSCSI initiators and hosts containing iSCSI initiators.  (IMA) continues to progress through the public review process within INCITS to become an American National Standard Institute (ANSI) standard in mid-2007.

XAM and DDF:

The SNIA's eXtensible Access Method (XAM) continues to progress through the SNIA standards process as the number of companies participating has doubled since the launch of the Technical Working Group in December 2005. Additionally, participation in the Common RAID Disk Data Format (DDF) Technical Working Group continues to increase in participation and momentum with 11 companies and more than 40 members driving the specification's development.
