MetLife reported that the average cost of a private-pay, private room nursing home stay is approximately $168,192, based on the average 2004 rate of $192 per day and the average length of stay for current nursing home residents (2.4 years). The highest rates were in Alaska, at $561 per day or $204,765 per year; Shreveport, Louisiana, had the lowest rates, at $99 per day or $36,135 per year.

The average monthly cost of assisted living increased from $2,379 per month ($28,548 per year) in 2003 to $2,524 per month ($30,288 per year) in 2004. The highest monthly average base cost was in Stamford, Connecticut Stamford is a city in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The average national private-pay home healthcare aide rate held steady from 2003 to 2004 at $18 per hour. Home healthcare was found to be most expensive in Hartford, Connecticut, ($28 per hour) and least expensive in Shreveport, Louisiana, and Jackson, Mississippi ($13 per hour).
