Guthrie's medium was catchy tunes, but his real mission was storytelling. Though constructed of plain, even sparse language In computational complexity theory, a sparse language is a formal language (a set of strings) such that the number of strings of length n in the language is bounded by a polynomial function of n. , his dust bowl ballads were eloquent narratives about America's natural beauty and its changing people.

Fired by a passionate political conscience, some of Guthrie's songs have the dramatic pull of short fiction. That's one reason why his life and music were such natural material for the popular stage show, ``Woody Guthrie's American Song.''
