The keel-laying ceremony, an ancient naval tradition, will be performed by Captain(N) J.Y. Forcier, who will insert a silver dollar into a slot in the cradle onto which the first unit of the hull will be laid. This event marks completion of the first large assembly of the new vessel which is expected to be delivered next year. Like each of the 12 ships, it will be named for a city or town in a Canadian province or territory. The seven-year MCDV construction project, valued at about $650 million, remains on schedule and has not incurred any cost overruns under the management of Fenco MacLaren, a Nepean-based engineering, project management and systems integration company.
