SMSC Introduces SIO10N268 Input/Output Device for Embedded System Applications.Business Editors/High-Tech Writers HAUPPAUGE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 29, 2004 SMSC SMSC Short Message Service Center SMSC Standard Microsystems Corporation (New York) SMSC Spiritual Moral Social Cultural (education) SMSC Stephenville Medical and Surgical Clinic (Nasdaq: SMSC) today introduced the SIO SIO Scripps Institution of Oceanography SIO Studentsamskipnaden i Oslo SIO Serial Input/Output SIO Social Investment Organization (Canada) SIO Senior Intelligence Officer SIO Service Information Octet (SS7) 10N268 Embedded Input/Output (I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output. I/O - Input/Output ) device targeting single board computers and industrial PC system applications where increased serial connectivity and flexibility in architecture migration from ISA-Bus to LPC-Bus are critical drivers for success. The SIO10N268 is the only industry embedded I/O controller that offers four serial ports and two modes of operation: LPC (language) LPC - A variant of C designed ca 1988 to program LP MUDs. Mode or ISA (1) (Instruction Set Architecture) See instruction set. (2) (Interactive Services Association) See Internet Alliance. (3) (Internet Security and Acceleration) See .NET. Mode in a single device. The ACPI-compliant SIO10N268 is targeted for industrial temperature applications such as single board computers, industrial PCs, ruggedized notebook PCs, as well as point-of-sale terminals, network gateway devices and more. The SIO10N268 contains an X-Bus interface, which not only provides for support of up to four external I/O components, but also allows the use of ISA flash; a more cost effective systems BIOS solution than LPC flash. "The SIO10N268 allows embedded system designers to increase the level of serial connectivity while reducing their overall bill of material costs," said Robert Stein, Vice President of Marketing for Embedded I/O Products. "Because of its flexibility, this is a great device for customers migrating from ISA to LPC architectures and is one of the few devices available today with four UARTs." Embedded applications with a need for more serial ports than the two, which are typically found in today's Super I/O controllers, can now take advantage of the four fully functional 16C550 compatible UARTs. This eliminates the need for costly add-in cards or board changes with additional discrete components. From a standards, protocol and package viewpoint, the SIO10N268 supports: -- ISA or LPC Modes via a strapping option -- 3.3V operational (5.0V tolerant) in either ISA or LPC Mode -- X-Bus Interface (LPC Mode only), which can interface to external I/O devices that have an 8-bit data bus and to standard ISA memory devices, up to 2MB, which can serve as BIOS flash -- Support for a serial infrared interface that complies with IrDA v1.2 (Fast IR), HPSIR HPSIR Hewlett Packard Serial Infra Red and ASKIR ASKIR Amplitude Shifted Keying Infra Red formats, as well as Consumer IR. -- A low profile 128-pin VTQFP VTQFP Very Thin Quad Flat Package package. Price and Availability: Samples and production of the SIO10N268 are available in a 128-pin VTQFP package and are priced at $4.75 (U.S. list price) in production quantities.
