3112, SCH3114 and the SCH3116, a family of pin compatible system controller hub chips. The suite of Input/Output (I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

I/O - Input/Output
) controllers delivers a more flexible design that enables system design engineers to standardize on a single part across a wide range of applications with similar characteristics. Achieving a new level of integration that reduces overall system costs, SMSC provides the necessary scalability across product and system designs.

"The SCH3112, SCH3114, SCH3116 family provides our customers with incredible value by combining critical system functionality normally requiring multiple parts into single devices. Through intelligent integration, we are enabling the lowest system cost possible while reducing board real estate requirements," said Rob Stein, Vice President of Marketing - Embedded I/O Products at SMSC. "Utilizing our best-in-class engineering prowess in mixed-signal design, these devices also allow our customers to achieve the highest thermal monitoring accuracy in an integrated device found in the market today with the industry's first industrial temperature rated embedded I/O controllers."

Benefits of New Product Family:

Through high levels of integration, embedded applications can now take advantage of up to six fully functional Universal Asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end.  Receiver-Transmitters (UARTs), eliminating the need for two separate I/O devices or discrete UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter) The electronic circuit that makes up the serial port. Also known as "universal serial asynchronous receiver transmitter" (USART), it converts parallel bytes from the CPU into serial bits for transmission, and vice  ICs. By increasing the number of serial ports, SMSC is addressing not only board constraint issues, but is also providing opportunities for bill-of-material cost reductions because it does not require additional components. Overall, the new embedded I/O controllers provide up to a 70 percent savings in board space through its space-efficient 128-pin VTQFP VTQFP Very Thin Quad Flat Package  packaging. This is critical as the embedded motherboard market drives towards smaller form factors.

In addition, the integration of reset generators further reduces system costs. By having this feature integrated into the embedded I/O controller, SMSC can deliver up to a 40 percent cost savings when compared to designs using a discrete component An elementary electronic device constructed as a single unit. Before integrated circuits (chips), all transistors, resistors and diodes were discrete. They are widely used in amplifiers and other devices that use large amounts of current. . SMSC's reset generator implementation allows for variable pulse widths and incorporates a Watchdog Timer A clock circuit that keeps counting from a set number down to zero. If the event it is monitoring occurs before it reaches zero, it resets to the starting number and starts counting down again.  and Critical Temperature Trigger that provides the ability to work across multiple platforms Refers to two or more operating environments, which typically include the CPU family and operating system. For example, if versions of a program run on Windows and the Macintosh, the software is said to support multiple platforms.  with different system requirements.

Thermal and voltage monitoring has become critical as it relates to those designs targeted for rugged industrial computer systems. To deliver a more reliable and robust offering, SMSC has developed hardware and thermal monitoring capabilities that deliver the industry's most accurate thermal sensing at 1.5 degrees C for an integrated device. Customers can now build a system that optimizes the temperature and acoustic specifications required in today's embedded and computing environments.

Key Features of the SCH3112, SCH3114, SCH3116 Controllers:

--Industrial-Temperature Rating (-40 degrees C to +85 degrees C)
