Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 27, 2003

Supports High Performance Memory Stick(TM) PRO Technology

Licensed by Sony

Standard Microsystems Corporation today announced that it is sampling its new USB USB
 in full Universal Serial Bus

Type of serial bus that allows peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, digitizers, data gloves, etc.) to be easily connected to a computer.

Certified as Hi-Speed by the USB Implementers Forum The USB Implementers Forum, USB-IF, is a non-profit organisation to promote and support the Universal Serial Bus. Its main activities are the promotion and marketing of USB, Wireless USB, USB On-The-Go, and the maintenance of the specifications, as well as a compliance program.  (USB-IF), the USB97C223 is targeted for the USB 2.0 flash media card reader market and enables end users of digital cameras and other flash media applications to read flash cards directly to their PCs at Hi-Speed USB 2.0 data rates.

Key breakthrough features for the USB97C223 include:

-- Ultra-low typical power consumption at Hi-Speed

-- Employment of new lower power SMSC SMSC Short Message Service Center

-- Cost saving integration for a Hi-Speed memory card controller

with on-chip 64KByte firmware ROM

Flash memory cards of all types are becoming ubiquitous as the "film" used in digital cameras. The USB97C223 interfaces to CompactFlash(TM) (CF), SmartMedia(TM) (SM), Memory Stick (MS), Secure Digital (SD), MultiMediaCard(TM) (MMC See MultiMediaCard and Microsoft Management Console. ), xD-Picture Card The xD-Picture Card is a type of flash memory card, used mainly in digital cameras. xD originally stood for extreme Digital.[1] The cards were developed by Olympus and Fujifilm and introduced into the market in July 2002. Flash media is also used to hold MP3 files, data files and other information. Card readers are used in applications such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) and photo printers and are beginning to appear in other peripherals such as keyboards, mice and displays. The increase of flash media capacity to 1Gb sizes is driving the adoption of USB 2.0 controllers to enable all of these applications to reduce data transfer times experienced by end users.

"The USB97C223 achieves unprecedented levels of performance in reading and writing all types of media," said Ron Ethe, Senior Director of Media Communications Products. "Incorporating dedicated 4-bit parallel circuitry licensed by Sony on-chip, the USB97C223 can read its media at over 3MBytes per second and write it at over 2.5MBytes per second. SMSC is proud to offer its customers the world class performance of Sony's leading edge Memory Stick PRO technology."

The USB97C223 is SMSC's second generation Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Memory Card Controller. SMSC introduced the world's first Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Multi-Format Memory Card Controller, the USB97C210, in April of 2002. The USB97C210 has become the standard in card reader and PC drive bay applications. According to according to

statistics published by In-Stat/MDR in March 2003, the USB 2.0 standalone card reader market is growing at a 99.9% compound annual rate.

Low Power

An on-chip 1.8V regulator allows the USB97C223's internal circuitry to operate at very low power from a single 3.3V supply. Use of SMSC's new industry leading low power physical layer technology yields a typical current consumption of a 55 mA. This low power consumption allows the USB97C223 to operate solely from the power supplied through the USB bus and makes the USB97C223 the ideal choice for bus powered external USB card readers, mobile card reader applications and USB compound devices where the card reader is hardwired to a USB 2.0 hub.

Software Support

The USB97C223 is compatible with Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 2000 SP3, Windows ME (Windows Millennium Edition) An upgrade to Windows 98 introduced in 2000. Windows ME added more support for digital cameras, multi-player Internet games and home networking. , Windows XP, Windows CE V4.1, and Apple(R) OS9 and OS10 Mass Storage Class drivers. Windows 98 and Windows 2000 drivers are also available from SMSC. SMSC also makes utility software available to its customers to help speed their product development.

Worldwide support is available from SMSC for the software and technical support needed to create unique customer features and value.

Package, Price and Availability

Samples and evaluation boards are available, and SMSC has started accepting production orders. The USB97C223-NE is offered in a 128-pin TQFP See QFP.  package ideal for use in small form factor card readers. The USB97C223-NE is priced at $4.29 in 10K quantities.

The USB97C223 data sheet, application schematic, board layout, BOM and other application information, as well as technical information on SMSC's other products, are available at SMSC's web site at www.smsc.com. Please contact your local SMSC office for more information.
