The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. 91C111 Non-PCI 10/100 Mbps Single Chip Ethernet MAC+PHY Controller. The LAN91C111 integrates the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  802.3 compliant Fast Ethernet Media Access Controller (MAC), the 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Physical Layer The Ethernet physical layer is the physical layer component of the Ethernet standard.

The Ethernet physical layer evolved over a considerable time span and encompasses quite a few physical media interfaces and several magnitudes of speed.

) into a single device to deliver full functionality in a high performance compact design, reducing production cost and board space. It is designed to facilitate the implementation of a third generation of Fast Ethernet connectivity solutions for embedded applications that use ARM, SH, MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second. , 68K/Coldfire, PowerPC and other RISC processors.

As the demand for network speed for multimedia and World Wide Web applications continues to increase, the LAN91C111 Fast Ethernet controller allows OEMs to build embedded Ethernet systems to meet the evolving needs of the network. The LAN91C111 provides a configurable, generic bus interface compatible with popular embedded processor host interfaces, including ARM, Hitachi SH, Power PC, ColdFire, 68000, and MIPS R3000. It provides a flexible slave interface for easy connectivity with industry-standard buses to handle synchronous and asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end.  transfers. With these features, the LAN91C111 is an ideal solution for Ethernet connectivity in a broad range of embedded devices such as set-top-boxes, ATM machines, switching hubs, printers, motherboards, adapter cards, security systems, network appliances and even game consoles.

The LAN91C111 offers advanced features such as SMSC's patented MMU (Memory Management Unit) architecture and a 32-bit wide internal data path. This I/O mapped architecture can sustain back-to-back frame transmission and reception for superior data throughput and optimal performance. It dynamically allocates buffer memory in an efficient buffer utilization scheme, reducing software tasks and relieving the host CPU CPU

from performing these housekeeping functions. The LAN91C111 features early transmit and receive to increase throughput. Only 16 bytes of I/O or memory address space are required, minimizing processor resources.

The integrated PHY interfaces to twisted pair Ethernet applications through standard magnetics. It contains the entire physical layer including Physical Coding Sublayer The Physical Coding Sublayer (PCS) further helps to define physical layer specifications for ethernet.

The Ethernet PCS sublayer is part of the Ethernet PHY layer. The hierarchy is as follows:
(PCS), Physical Medium Attachment (PMA PMA (papillary-marginal-attached),
n a system of epidemiologic scoring of periodontal disease devised by Schour and Massler in which the symbols denote the areas involved in gingival inflammation.

PMA Progressive muscular atrophy
), Twisted Pair Physical Medium Dependent (TP-PMD (Twisted Pair-Physical Medium Dependent) An ANSI standard for an FDDI network that uses UTP instead of optical fiber. See CDDI. ) and AutoNegotiation (AUTONEG). The on-chip AutoNegotiation algorithm enables the controller to automatically configure itself for 100 or 10 Mbps and Full or Half Duplex operation. The addition of internal output waveshaping circuitry and on-chip filters eliminates the need for external filters required in 100BASE-TX and 10BASE-T applications.

The device also supports external PHY through the Media Independent Interface (MII) pins. External Physical Layer (PHY) support expands this controller's capabilities, so it can support fiber and other media.

The LAN91C111 features low power 3.3-volt operation in a small 128 pin TQFP or 128 pin QFP package. It is optimized for use in designs requiring low power and a small form factor package. With built-in Media Access Layer (MAC), Physical Layer (PHY) and Internal SRAM, the LAN91C111 is the simplest and most cost efficient solution for Ethernet connectivity. Also, the LAN91C111 Ethernet controller eliminates design complexity due to critical timing, layout and other complicated hardware parameters required to implement standard PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

 system solutions.

Collateral

The LAN91C111 will be supported by a complete collateral package, including reference designs evaluation boards and drivers. An NDIS4 driver for Windows98 is available now. Drivers for VxWorks and Linux are in development and are expected to be available Q1 and Q2 of 2001, respectively. ETX Utility Software, available now, greatly simplifies development.

Price, Package and Availability

The LAN91C111-NE is packaged in a 128 pin TQFP and priced at $17.65 each in quantities of 10,000. The LAN91C111-NC is packaged in a 128 pin QFP and is priced at $17.05 each in quantities of 10,000. Samples, an evaluation board with reference schematics and BOM, an NDIS4 driver for WIndows98 and ETX Utility Software are available immediately. Please contact your local SMSC sales office for more information.
