Business/High Tech Editors

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 16, 2002

Standard Microsystems Corporation (Nasdaq: SMSC SMSC Short Message Service Center
SMSC Standard Microsystems Corporation (New York)
SMSC Spiritual Moral Social Cultural (education)
SMSC Stephenville Medical and Surgical Clinic
), the leading supplier of Input/Output (I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

I/O - Input/Output
) devices for notebook PCs, announced today at WinHEC 2002 the LPC (language) LPC - A variant of C designed ca 1988 to program LP MUDs. 47N253 Integrated Advanced Notebook I/O Controller, Embedded Controller Controller circuitry built into a device or on the main system board, in contrast with a removable card or module.  and Keyboard Controller for full-featured notebook PCs.

SMSC, a WinHEC 2002 sponsor, is demonstrating the LPC47N253 at the conference, which runs through April 18th.

The LPC47N253 integrates the functionality of a Super I/O, a high-performance 8051 microprocessor for keyboard control and system management, as well as a shared flash interface, all in a 256-pin BGA (Ball Grid Array) A popular surface mount chip package that uses a grid of solder balls as its connectors. Available in plastic and ceramic varieties, BGA is noted for its compact size, high lead count and low inductance, which allows lower voltages to be used.  or LBGA LBGA Low-Profile Ball Grid Array

Robert Hollingsworth, SMSC's Senior Vice President for Advanced I/O Products, stated, "SMSC's LPC47N253 offers a unique set of innovative features including the LPC PortSwitch(TM) interface connection, a shared flash interface and the Serial Peripheral Interface (communications, hardware) Serial Peripheral Interface - (SPI) A serial interface in which a master device supplies clock pulses to exchanges data serially with a slave over two data wires (Master-Slave and Slave-Master). . With the LPC47N253, a portable PC designer can combine state-of-the-art features in a small form factor with the lowest possible bill-of-materials cost."

A key new feature of the LPC47N253 is the SMSC LPC PortSwitch interface. The LPC PortSwitch interface, first demonstrated at this year's Spring Intel(R) Developer's Forum, is a hot-switchable external LPC interface feature that enables the design of more cost-effective, full-feature port replication and docking solutions. The LPC47N253 also incorporates a Shared Flash Interface, which allows system designers the opportunity to choose the most economical flash memory solution for their application - ISA (1) (Instruction Set Architecture) See instruction set.

(3) (Internet Security and Acceleration) See .NET.
Flash, LPC Flash or a Firmware Hub. The latest addition to SMSC's line of advanced notebook I/O products, the LPC47N253 incorporates the industry-standard Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI (1) (Stateful Packet Inspection) See stateful inspection.

(2) (Service Provider Interface) The programming interface for developing Windows drivers under WOSA.
) for communication with direct battery management solutions. The SPI also allows the LPC47N253 to communicate with and control a wide variety of third-party companion devices, including ADCs, DACs, and EEPROMS.

For Trusted Computer solutions, embedded CMOS memory in the LPC47N253 allows for the restricted-access storage of encrypted keys.

In recognition of the importance of BIOS support, the LPC47N253 is introduced with full BIOS support by Phoenix and Insyde, the leading BIOS vendors for notebook computers.

Price, Package and Availability

The LPC47N253-AAQ is packaged in a 256-pin low-profile ball grid array “BGA” redirects here. For other uses, see BGA (disambiguation).

A ball grid array (BGA) is a type of surface-mount packaging used for integrated circuits.
(LBGA - 1.4mm height) and is priced at $13.50 in production quantities. The LPC47N253-AAF is packaged in a 256-pin ball grid array (BGA) package and is priced at $12.00 in production quantities.

Samples of the LPC47N253-AAQ are available immediately, as are a full suite of software drivers, evaluation boards and field application engineering support. Samples of the LPC47N253-AAF will be available shortly.

The LPC47N253 product brief, as well as technical information on SMSC's other products, is available on SMSC's web site at http://www.smsc.com. Please contact your local SMSC sales office for more information.
