SMOOTH AND STYLISH GLASS TILE OFFERS BEAUTY AND ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFIT.

Byline: Sandra Barrera Staff Writer

While thumbing through Sunset magazine one rainy day, Karen Webb stumbled upon an article about a woman who makes glass tiles Glass tiles are pieces of glass formed into consistent shapes. Glass was used in mosaics as early as 2500 BC, but it took until the 3rd Century BC before innovative artisans in Greece, Persia and India created glass tiles.  for a living.

Webb, a television graphics artist from Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern , felt like she'd been hit by a bolt of lightning.

``How dumb am I? Here I've been making glass plates as a hobby for the last four years,'' she says. ``I just never thought of glass tile. And then once I thought about it ... I saw it everywhere.''

From the Sunset Idea House in Valencia to the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States. , decorative glass tile is showing up in America's bathrooms, kitchens and alongside pools. It's making its way into other areas of the house, too, as accent pieces on fireplaces, light fixtures and floors.

``It really crosses over all different mediums,'' says Webb, whose Pescadero-based Tree Street Design firm was tapped by Sunset magazine to help decorate its new Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Idea House.

Webb's vibrant glass tiles are featured in an upstairs girl's bathroom, where they frame a mirror and are scattered on the wall above the bathtub. And when the magazine opens its next idea house in Phoenix, Ariz., this October, it will showcase her ``works of art'' around the pool.

Today's tile, with its surface effects and wide range of light-radiating colors, adds a depth not found in more traditional ceramic or stone.

Yet glass tile is so versatile it can resemble its ceramic cousin.

Tom Silva, general contractor A general contractor is an organization or individual that contracts with another organization or individual (the owner) for the construction of a building, road or any other execution of work or facility.  for PBS' home improvement show ``This Old House,'' recalls installing a glass tile entryway in a ranch-style home that ``looked like ceramic tile ... that's the funny thing about it.''

Still, the decision to go with glass over the more popular ceramic or stone is ultimately driven by design and cost. Price can range from $10 per square foot to upward of more than; above.

``I won't lie to you - they're expensive,'' says Webb, whose pebble design, for example, sells for $84 a lineal That which comes in a line, particularly a direct line, as from parent to child or grandparent to grandchild.

In some cases, consumers choose glass tile because of a conscious desire to protect the environment.

``We're taking from consumers and industry and creating recipes out of the glass that we're finding in the waste stream to make our blazestones,'' says Chris Munford, architectural product manager for Seattle-based Bedrock Blazestone.

Manufacturers who produce tiles from 100 percent recycled glass are few. But they're getting a boost from consumers seeking earth-friendly building materials, like wood harvested from sustainable forests, nontoxic paints and recycled goods.

In the last three years, eco-conscious companies like Bedrock Blazestone have seen their annual sales increase on average by 15 percent.

``I don't have actual statistics I can share with you, but the interest level from consumers has been tremendous,'' says Sean Gildea, president of Carlsbad-based Oceanside Glasstile, one of the first U.S. companies to push the limits of glass tile design.

The company manufacturers tiles in a variety of shapes, sizes, finishes and colors, from mother-of-pearl to amber.

Industries, another producer of 100 percent recycled glass mosaic, field and specialty tiles, is perhaps the more colorful. Its tiles come in 36 juicy shades.

Terri Raudenbush, founder of the Boise, Idaho-based company, describes her soft-edged tiles as ``little gem stones'' because ``they're so bright and shiny.''

Bedrock Blazestone's signature tiles, on the other hand, are not colorized but rely on the glass taken from the waste stream to create a palette of browns, blues and greens Blues and Greens, political factions in the Byzantine Empire in the 6th cent. They're also thicker than ordinary glass tiles. And because they are fired at such high temperatures, they're denser, making them stronger when applied to surfaces, although most glass generally has a breaking strength of about 700 pounds per square inch Noun 1. pounds per square inch - a unit of pressure

But glass isn't invincible, caution tile makers.

``What I tell people is that the same bowling ball you're going to drop on your countertop that breaks your ceramic tile is going to break your glass tile,'' Munford says.
