PALMDALE -- Having banned smoking at Palmdale's newest parks and recreation attractions, city officials are now looking to limit smoking at all outdoor city facilities except in designated areas.

Expanding on actions taken in July to prohibit smoking at the DryTown Water Park and at the amphitheater amphitheater (ăm`fəthē'ətər, ăm`pə–), open structure used for the exhibition of gladiatorial contests, struggles of wild beasts, sham sea battles, and similar spectacles.  and softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  complex at Marie Kerr Park, the City Council will vote Wednesday on whether to expand the ban to all outdoor facilities owned, leased or operated by the city. Each of the facilities would have at least one designated smoking area.

``It's a good idea,'' said Mayor Jim Ledford. ``If you don't smoke, you don't want a smoker smoker A person who smokes tobacco, almost always understood to be cigarettes Ratio of ♂:♀ smokers Philippines64/19, China61/7, Saudi Arabia53/2, Russia50/12  around you.''

Councilman Steve Hofbauer said the ordinance A law, statute, or regulation enacted by a Municipal Corporation.

An ordinance is a law passed by a municipal government. A municipality, such as a city, town, village, or borough, is a political subdivision of a state within which a municipal corporation has been
is a ``middle of the road'' alternative to an outright smoking ban.

Hofbauer cites the city's transportation center as an example of how designated smoking areas can work well. Having a designated smoking site has kept cigarette-butt litter down to a minimum and keeps smoke away from the nonsmokers, he said.

``This accommodates the guys who are smoking without impacting those who don't,'' Hofbauer said.

The city staff estimates that it will cost $16,000 for signage and providing ashtrays at permitted areas.

In July, the City Council voted to ban smoking at the amphitheater and the Best of the West softball complex and at the DryTown Water Park. Prior to that action, city ordinance prohibited smoking in enclosed en·close   also in·close

The smoking bans at those facilities took effect in August.
