SMITS SAYS `SOUTH PACIFIC' WITH CLOSE MAY NOT HAPPEN.Byline: Marilyn Beck & Stacy Jenel Smith Don't count on Jimmy Smits and Glenn Close getting together for that highly touted ABC ABC in full American Broadcasting Co. Smits tells this column that ABC jumped the gun with its announcement that he and Close would team in the classic World War II musical, this time giving it an older woman/younger man spin. ``It's not a signed, sealed deal,'' he reveals. ``I simply don't know Don't know (DK, DKed) "Don't know the trade." There's a great script, and I'd love working with Glenn. But there are a lot of business pieces to contend with.'' To say nothing of Jimmy's very busy schedule. He's been jumping from one big-screen project to the next since he ended his reign with ``NYPD Blue.'' He shot Wim Wenders' ``Million Dollar Hotel'' with Mel Gibson early this year, went almost immediately into New Line's ``Price of Glory,'' and is now in Toronto starring with Kim Basinger in the supernatural thriller ``Bless the Child.'' Jimmy expects to make it to L.A. for the Sept. 12 Emmy Awards - where he's up for honors for his dramatic swan-song performance from ``NYPD Blue.'' Win or lose, he has racked up an impressive track record with the TV academy - the holder of 11 nominations, one for each season he was on ``NYPD NYPD New York City Police Department (since 1845; New York City, NY, USA) NYPD New York Play Development Blue'' and ``L.A. Law.'' The latter earned him his only Emmy thus far. `Family' man Comic Louie Anderson, who has drawn much material from his dysfunctional childhood, says ``my therapy and my life'' have moved in a decidedly upbeat direction. ``I've been working on having a more serendipitous ser·en·dip·i·ty n. pl. ser·en·dip·i·ties 1. Anderson has his new version of ``Family Feud'' debuting in syndication Sept. 20, and he adds, ``The show came along at just the right time - it's a light, fun show to do. And it gives me a venue - I can be funny with the families.'' In that light vein, he's talking about putting together a big kickoff party for the show - with invitees including real-life show-biz families ``like the Osmonds, the Nelsons, the Jacksons, maybe the Cowsills.'' Now hear this Polly Letofsky, who set out on a 27-country walk benefiting the World Walk Foundation for Breast Cancer Aug. 1, is a serious TV fan - so much so that she's listening to audiotapes of old ``Seinfeld,'' ``Friends'' and ``3rd Rock From the Sun'' episodes as she traipses along. Letofsky's father has had 48 hours of those shows transferred to audio for her so far. Friends and family are providing videotapes. (Hey, maybe the networks will get in on this.)
