SMITHFIELD FOODS PRESIDENT CITES IMPROVING EARNINGS TREND

SMITHFIELD, Va., Dec. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Citing extremely strong holiday ham sales and improved fresh meat margins, Joseph W. Luter III, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Smithfield Foods, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: SFDS) stated that he anticipates that "the company's fiscal 1994 third quarter earnings will be substantially better than those in the same quarter of the prior fiscal year, and if the trend continues for the remainder of the quarter, it could be one of the best in the company's history.
"The company's Bladen County, N.C., fresh pork plant has continued to improve in yields and operating efficiencies and is currently killing hogs at its design capacity of 15,000 to 16,000 hogs per day on a one- shift basis," Luter said.
