 SMITHERS TESTS RUSSIAN-MADE URETHANE TIRES
AKRON, Ohio, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Smithers Scientific Services

Inc. recently conducted extensive performance tests on cast urethane passenger car snow tires produced in Russia as part of a pilot program for that country's tire industry.
The tests were conducted on 12 Russian-made 165R13 pneumatic, urethane tires at Smithers tire and automotive proving grounds and laboratories in the United States. The tires were molded from special urethanes developed in Russia exclusively for winter environment applications.
The Smithers' tests ranged from sophisticated force and moment tests to routine U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 109 evaluations.
Overall performance of the urethane tires was "about comparable" to the standard reference test tire (SRTT) used during both snow and ice tests and dynamic tests on wet and dry pavement, the company said.
"In most of the tests we conducted, the urethane tires' performance ranged anywhere from 85 percent to 115 percent against a 100-percent standard set for the SRTT tire," said Herman K. Hochschwender, Smithers' chairman and CEO.
He noted the urethane tires performed "much better than expected" during extended high speed tests reaching 122 mph, but that more development work was indicated in the area of dynamic traction on ice.
"These are the first urethane tires we have seen which performed anywhere near this level," Hochschwender continued. "And, these are true urethane tires. Unlike many other tests, which were hybrids, these tires do not have rubber tread. The elastomers are all urethane-based."
Hochschwender emphasized that the purpose of the urethane tire tests was "to obtain data for the American tire industry and to demonstrate the technical development Russia has made." The project was also a part of a joint testing and laboratory correlation effort "to help the Russian tire industry come in line with U.S. and European requirements," Hochschwender explained.
The tire tests were conducted at Smithers' analytical laboratories in Akron, Ohio; at the company's tire and automotive testing division in Ravenna, Ohio; Smithers Transportation Test Center in Pecos, Texas; and at the firm's winter environment proving grounds in Raco, Mich.
Smithers is a leading independent testing, research and consulting firm serving a worldwide client base in the tire, automotive, elastomeric, medical device and marine industries.
