) has introduced the FDC37C93xAPM, the industry's first ACPI-compliant PC I/O controller. Designed specifically for desktop machines carrying core logic chipsets that do not implement ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) A power management specification developed by Intel, Toshiba and Microsoft that makes hardware status information available to the operating system.  (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface See ACPI.

), the FDC37C93xAPM implements the ACPI full master register set as well as legacy System Management Interrupt See SMI.  (SMI) power management.

The new device, which is housed in a 160-pin QFP and is completely footprint-compatible with SMC's FDC37C93xFR, was specifically designed to implement individual enable controls for each power management scheme - SCIs (System Controller Interrupts under ACPI) or SMIs. System designers have the unprecedented flexibility to determine, on an event-by-event basis, which events are best handled by SCI (Scalable Coherent Interface) An IEEE standard for a high-speed bus that uses wire or fiber-optic cable. It can transfer data up to 1GBytes/sec.

 or SMI logic.

The FDC37C93xAPM supports 15 independently enabled events for either SMI or SCI interrupts, with a 24-bit free-running power management timer as a 16th interrupt. These capabilities allow designers to implement selected ACPI features in lower-cost "value-line" desktop computers running ACPI-compliant operating systems.

The FDC37C93xAPM carries all of SMC's Ultra-I/O(TM) features, including an 8042-compatible keyboard controller, MC146818/DS1287-compatible real-time clock, IDE interface, floppy disk controller A floppy disk controller (FDC) is a special-purpose chip and associated circuitry that directs and controls reading from and writing to a computer's floppy disk drive (FDD).  and serial, parallel and game ports plus 16-bit address decode/qualification. It also supports ACCESS.bus, ISA Plug-and-Play (Version 1.0a), PC 97 and the IrDA, HP-SIR and ASKIR ASKIR Amplitude Shifted Keying Infra Red  infrared data transfer protocols.

Douglas L. Finke, corporate vice president of marketing for SMC's Component Products Division, says the introduction of the FDC37C93xAPM "clearly demonstrates SMC's continued technology leadership in PC I/O devices and our commitment to deliver the technology to our customers in the most useful form possible. The flexibility built into the '93xAPM and its footprint compatibility with our '93xFR give designers the widest choice available in power management options."

Engineering samples of the FDC37C93xAPM are available now, with production quantities available in the first quarter of 1997. Pricing is under $14 each in quantities of 10,000 or more.
