Business Editors and High-Tech Writers

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)---April 22, 2002

New TigerCard(TM) 1000 Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

(2) (Peripheral Component Interconnect) The most widely used I/O bus (peripheral bus).

is providing network administrators with a more functional and flexible solution, allowing them to easily increase the performance and reliability of their existing networks," said Betty Chan, product manager at SMC Networks. "The incorporation of the high-performance Broadcom(R) chipset into our next-generation Gigabit Ethernet adapters allows us to enhance the performance and feature set of our NICs, while reducing costs to our customers."

"SMC's introduction of the new TigerCard(TM) family, based on Broadcom's Altima(TM) AC1000 PCI Gigabit Ethernet controllers, solidifies their leadership position and enables the next generation of cost-performance for Gigabit Ethernet adapters," said Steven Kubes, Product Line Manager for Broadcom. "SMC's customers will benefit from a dramatic performance boost and productivity enhancement by seamlessly upgrading their older networks to gigabit speed."

SMC9552TX and SMC9562TX -- Gigabit Copper Ethernet PCI Network Adapters

The 32-bit SMC9552TX is a 10/100/1000 Mbps PCI Ethernet adapter designed as a high performance alternative to 10/100 Mbps adapters for high performance workstations. Designed specifically to address the performance and reliability requirements of servers, SMC also introduced the 10/100/1000 Mbps 32/64-bit SMC9562TX PCI Ethernet adapter. Both adapters allow network administrators to upgrade network performance by providing data transfer speeds of up to 10 times the speed of Fast Ethernet over standard Category 5 cable.

In addition to the performance benefits of upgrading to Gigabit speed without having to upgrade the network infrastructure, both adapters offer a robust feature set including full duplex and auto-negotiation support, Intelligent Interrupt Management, IP Checksum A value used to ensure data are stored or transmitted without error. It is created by calculating the binary values in a block of data using some algorithm and storing the results with the data.  Offloading, and Jumbo Frame support. Quality of Service and VLAN See virtual LAN.

support functions will be available as a driver upgrade in late May.

Both adapters support all major operating systems and comply with IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  802.3, 802.3ab and 802.3u standards. The SMC9552TX is available now at an estimated street price of $66. And the SMC9562TX is currently available at an estimated street price of $108.

SMC9562SX -- 32/64-bit Gigabit Fiber Ethernet PCI Network Adapter

The SMC9562SX is a Plug-and-Play 32/64-bit 1000Mbps PCI Ethernet adapter that provides 10 times the speed of traditional Fast Ethernet over standard multimode fiber links. Operating in 32- or 64-bit PCI modes, the adapter delivers high performance throughput with minimal CPU CPU

 utilization.

Utilizing 1000Base-SX multimode fiber cable, the adapter provides 2Gbps of network bandwidth at 32- or 64-bit data transfer rates with an advanced feature set that includes full-duplex, flow control and auto-negotiation support, Intelligent Interrupt Management, IP Checksum Offloading, Jumbo Frame support, Quality of Service, VLAN, Wake-on-LAN, and ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) A power management specification developed by Intel, Toshiba and Microsoft that makes hardware status information available to the operating system.  support functions.

The TigerCard 1000 32/64-bit Gigabit Ethernet PCI Network Card (SMC9562SX) supports all major operating systems and complies with IEEE 802.3, 802.3x, 802.3z and 802.3u standards. The adapter will be available in June, at an estimated street price of $299.99.

Backed by a limited lifetime warranty and 24/7 technical support, SMC's network solutions are available via direct marketers, e-commerce sites, through the Solution Provider channel, and to strategic accounts around the world.
