single board computer designed to enhance embedded networking, printer, and game applications.

The SMARTengine/43PCI single board computer combines the popular MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second.  R4000 RISC RISC

bandwidth PCI bus required by high-performance, low-power embedded systems. The SMARTengine/43PCI is immediately available as a standard product with 2MB DRAM configuration for $685 in OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  production quantities. Pricing for other configurations is available on request.

The SMARTengine/43PCI single board computer provides a combination of MIPS RISC architecture with the high-bandwidth PCI bus to meet the escalating requirements of many high-performance systems. According to Semico Research Corp., unit sales in 1996 of MIPS RISC processors were approximately 19.2 million, making it the most widely used core processor for embedded systems.

The SMARTengine/43PCI single board computer is a seamless integration of the 100MHz MIPS RISC4300; 8MB base EDO memory; four SIMM slots for expansion with EDO, FPM DRAM, or Flash; 256KB - 1MB EPROM EPROM

Form of computer memory that does not lose its content when the power supply is cut off and that can be erased and reused.
; 32KB NVRAM (Non-Volatile RAM) May refer to dynamic RAM (DRAM) and static RAM (SRAM) chips that are backed up by a battery or to non-volatile chips such as flash memory. See non-volatile memory, dynamic RAM, static RAM and solid state disk. ; two serial ports; three counter/timers; and a 66MHz PCI bus with three expansion slots for plug-in, add-on PC Cards. The board typically consumes 2.0A at 5V.

"Target users can start with the SMARTengine/43PCI single board computer and add proprietary PCI interface logic or plug in standard PCI hardware with the appropriate drivers instead of committing the time and engineering expertise required to develop a custom computer board," stated Nageen Sharma, vice president of SMART's Embedded Computer Products Division.

"We can customize our base product with user PCI logic on one board for maximum cost savings. SMART specializes in providing turnkey embedded computer solutions with features such as ethernet, SCSI SCSI

, DES and RSA encryption on one board with software support, which benefits OEMs in getting their product to market quickly."

For ease of software development, The SMARTengine/43 PCI includes a resident PROM monitor with diagnostics, power-on self test, and utilities. Leading operating systems such as Wind River Systems' VxWorks are available for the board from SMART. Development tools based on Sun and Silicon Graphics workstations or PCS are available from a host of third parties.
