SMALL SCREEN THE BUZZ ON TELEVISION.

Byline: - Compiled by Valerie Kuklenski

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS: ``Providence'' apparently was not divine for NBC NBC

Major U.S. commercial broadcasting company. It was formed in 1926 by RCA Corp., General Electric Co. (GE), and Westinghouse and was the first U.S. company to operate a broadcast network.
. The 5-year-old drama starring Melina Kanakaredes and Mike Farrell is about to quit business because of low ratings. NBC says the two-hour series finale on Dec. 20 ``will serve as a touching, heartwarming send-off for the entire Hansen family.'' Gee, seems it would have been more heartwarming to let the show ride until May as is the norm with established series. Whatever NBC has in mind to take its place must be too good to hold back. Major U.S. television network. It began when the expanding national radio network NBC split into the separate Red and Blue networks in 1928.

MORE HARDBALL IN ORANGE COUNTY: Chris Matthews brings his MSNBC MSNBC Microsoft/National Broadcasting Company  news/talk show ``Hardball'' to the Orange County campus of Chapman University today. He'll be joined by action star and part-time political animal Arnold Schwarzenegger to take questions from Chapman students. After the live telecast, a Chapman student gets the extreme honor (and severe pain) of sitting in the ``Hardball Hot Seat'' for a rapid-fire one-on-one with Matthews about current events and a chance to play in a final tournament for a $10,000 scholarship.

HARDBALL WITH CHRIS MATTHEWS Hardball with Chris Matthews is a talk show on MSNBC broadcast weekdays at 5 and 7 PM hosted by Chris Matthews. It originally aired on now-defunct America's Talking (as "Politics with Chris Matthews") and later CNBC. , 6 tonight, MSNBC.

ED SULLIVAN, WHERE ARE YOU?: Tom Cavanaugh, star of NBC's ``Ed,'' will host ``Extreme Variety,'' a special one exec describes as having ``a glitzy feel along with a sideshow twist.'' There's the sword swallower, the contortionist, the girl with the flaming hula hoop and the aerial acrobats. This is probably the show Ed Sullivan would be hosting if he were still around. All that's missing is the guy spinning plates on sticks to ``The Flight of the Bumble Bee.''

EXTREME VARIETY, 8 tonight, NBC, Channel 4.
