GOING BOWLING: ``Hollywood Bowl The Hollywood Bowl is a modern amphitheatre at 2301 North Highland Avenue in Hollywood, California, USA, that is used primarily for music performances. The "bowl" in this context is the natural cavity in the earth into which the amphitheater is built, rather than the shape of the : Music Under the Stars'' is a nostalgic wallow wallow

in one of the area's most famous icons. Archival footage of the Bowl's early days - and before, when folks were just discovering the area's natural acoustic qualities - show the series of backdrop designs (including a set from a Douglas Fairbanks film that he donated to the site) before the famous permanent installation was built. In the '30s and '40s, the documentary points out, Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  was a cultural mecca for musically minded European emigres seeking to escape Hitler. Frank Sinatra's performance in the early '40s paved the way for more popular genres to be presented at the Bowl. Clips of the Bowl's appearance in such entertainments as Bugs Bunny and Pink Panther cartoons, ``Anchors Aweigh'' and even ``The Beverly Hillbillies'' are offered. The documentary skimps on more recent years, with a random assortment of pop stars who've played the Bowl presented in a sloppy photo montage and jazz greats listed in cheesy cheesy (che´ze) caseous.  graphics. But for anyone who's ever enjoyed a few breezy hours at the venue, ``Hollywood Bowl'' offers an engaging history lesson.
