SMALL SCHOOL: WINNING IN AND OUT OF THE POOL.

Byline: ERIK BOAL Special to the Daily News

Viewpoint High of Calabasas' boys' swim team already had demonstrated it could excel in the classroom. In Thursday's Fountain League finals, the Patriots showed they could rule the pool, too.

Nine days after receiving the Southern Section academic team championship banner in the 1,500-under enrollment division with a team grade-point average of 3.589, Viewpoint captured the Fountain title at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena.

Despite winning only the meet's final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Patriots relied on depth to offset Milken Community of LosAngeles' six victories, five of them in league-record time. Brothers Adam and Jordan Hollander were involved in all the record-setting efforts - three individual and two relays - for Milken.

Viewpoint had four swimmers score in six individual events and three score in the other two to finish with 471 points, well ahead of Milken's 349. The Patriots finished fourth in the 200 medley relay and third in the 200 free relay, and Alex Brody, Patrick Caloz, Michael Segal and Chase Zacha won the 400 free relay in 3 minutes, 34.29 seconds.

Viewpoint's swimmers will attempt to extend their seasons today in the Southern Section Div. IV prelims at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. The division championships are Thursday at 6 p.m.
