``I was upstairs working on my computer when I smelled something like a wood barbecue,'' said Chris Crouse, 38. ``I looked out the back window and about four houses down, I could see the ridge on fire and called 911. I ran out of the house and got the neighbors out.

``About the fourth house down, there was a baby sitter who didn't speak English. She was trying to tell me something, but I told her she needed to get out of the house and across the street.''

Kevin Podratz, 14, was home with his sister when he saw the smoke out a window and called his father.

Cindy Wise, 34, made her son, Jacob, 7, and daughter, Avery, 3, stand near the family truck as she grabbed a safe and her computer that contained family photos.

``Thank God my husband cleared the brush near the fence,'' she said.

Battalion Chief Michael Singer said wetting down the green hillsides as the fire crept uphill was a good idea, but protecting wooden accessories in yards and on houses is better.

``All those wooden fences or decorations on the houses could catch an ember if we had a good wind,'' he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
