SMALL BITES MATTERHORN TO CLOSE AS BARONE'S MOVES IN.

Byline: - Larry lipson

The possible joint venture between Barone's in Sherman Oaks and the Matterhorn Chef in Valley Glen has fizzled.

The two restaurants were planning to join up and become one. This would have taken place in the Matterhorn Chef's building.

But now the plan has evolved into a simple purchase and relocation for Barone's, with the Matterhorn ceasing to exist.

Sixty-year-old Barone's, 14151 Ventura Blvd., owned by the Monteleone family, scheduled to close Jan. 23, is actually in escrow to purchase the Matterhorn Chef, 13726 Oxnard St. It will relocate there with a reopening goal of mid-March, according to according to

Ueli Huegli, chef-owner of the Matterhorn, said that his restaurant will close in conjunction with the close of escrow, which is scheduled for Jan. 31.

Consequently, there are many devotees of chef Huegli's Swiss and Austro-German fare who are currently making last-minute dinner reservations.

Barone's clientele, also busy filling up the familiar, soon-to-be-torn- down building, hope to be enjoying their favorite pizzas and Italian food at the new Barone's by spring.

They will also be able to try four or five holdover hold·o·ver

And when escrow closes and the Matterhorn goes dark, Huegli said he would immediately begin searching for another restaurant property, smaller than his Matterhorn Chef and possibly something he'd build himself - most likely, he assures his following, to be located in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley
