SMA leader earns prestigious Duke University Medical Center Award.


On October 31, 2003, T. Rudolph "Rudy" Howell, MD, of Chester, Virginia, was presented with the 2003 Charles A. Dukes Award, Duke University's highest honor for volunteer service. Just a few days later, on November 8, Dr. Howell was installed as President of the Southern Medical Association during its 97th Annual Scientific Assembly in Atlanta.

, Dr. Howell earned numerous' military awards and honors, and retired from the Air Force with the rank of Major General. Dr. Howell is a member of the American Medical Association American Medical Association (AMA), professional physicians' organization (founded 1847). Its goals are to protect the interests of American physicians, advance public health, and support the growth of medical science.  and a Fellow of the American College of Radiology The American College of Radiology (ACR), founded in 1923, is a non-profit professional medical organization composed of diagnostic radiologists, radiation oncologists, interventional radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists. . In addition, he has long-time associations with several other medical organizations. He was on the President's Advisory Council at Duke University, and served as President of the Davison Club there.

A member of the Southern Medical Association since 1969, he has been involved in the leadership of the Association since 1977. In addition, he has served as an officer for the Sections on Radiology and Medical Management and Administration, Chairman of the Coordinating Committee on Long-Range Planning, and as a member of the Coordinating Committee on Administration/Budget, the Advisory Committee on Management Compensation, the Advisory Committee on Constitution and Bylaws, and the Presidential Committee on Selections. He is also a member of the Society of 1906, and serves on the Editorial Board of the Southern Medical Journal.
