SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT IN GRADS' SCORES 4,500 STUDENTS IN LAUSD HAVE YET TO PASS EXIT EXAM.

Roughly 84 percent of L.A. Unified's seniors and 52 percent of English-learners have passed mandatory English and math tests and can graduate in June, results released Monday show.

While the figures show improvements over last year's seniors -- when 82 percent and 50 percent, respectively, had passed -- some 4,500 of the 29,000 students in the Class of 2007 have yet to pass the California High School Exit Exam The California High School Exit Exam (or CAHSEE) is a requirement for high school graduation in the state of California, created by the California Department of Education to improve the academic performance of California high school students, and especially of high school .

The results reflect tests given through February. They were also administered in March and will be released in May.

About 91 percent of seniors statewide have passed the exam.

About 29 percent of LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA)  high school students are English-learners, compared with 17 percent statewide.

 covers material and skills through 10th grade, and the math covers sixth- and seventh-grade material, as well as some algebra.

Students need to correctly answer 55 percent of math questions and about 60 percent of the English questions to pass.

Among other LAUSD subgroups, the pass rate for Asians rose from 95 percent to 96 percent; African-Americans, 71 percent to 75 percent; Latinos, 80 percent to 83 percent; and disabled students, 27 percent to 32 percent.

Students with disabilities can be exempted from the CAHSEE requirement if they meet seven criteria, including trying to take the test and doing remedial work.

About 2,000 students in the Class of 2006 failed the test despite taking summer school, and 1,800 re-enrolled in the LAUSD system, Wong said. About 22 percent of the 1,800 have passed the test so far.

Superintendent David L. Brewer said he was encouraged by the results.

Last year, the LAUSD spent about $8 million and the state allocated $70 million on academic "boot camps Software from Apple that enables an Intel x86-based Macintosh to host the Windows XP operating system. Boot Camp is used to divide the hard disk into Windows and Mac partitions, to install the necessary drivers and to create a dual boot environment. " and test-preparation courses.

And Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposed 2007-08 budget provides $5 million for materials and $72.4 million for instruction to help students pass the exam.
