PALMDALE - In an effort to keep alive the memory of a fellow officer slain in the line of duty In the Line of Duty may refer to:

, sheriff's deputies and city officials gathered Saturday morning on the 10th anniversary of the shooting death of Deputy Richard B. Hammack.

Officials honored Hammack's memory along with other deputies killed in the line of duty while announcing the kickoff of National Law Enforcement Week, which is aimed at raising public support for law enforcement and firefighters.

``I would hope that in honoring Richard, we would also honor those who protect what we hold so dear,'' said Palmdale sheriff's station Capt. Terry Judge. ``As long as we take the time to express our love to our family and friends and everyone we hold dear, then the deaths of Richard Hammack, David March David March (born 25 July 1979) is a professional rugby league player for the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats. He plays at hooker.

He has a twin brother called Paul March who also plays for the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
and all the others will never be in vain.''

Hammack, 31, was killed May 11, 1992, when he was hit by three bullets in a gunbattle inside a mobile home in the 3500 block of East Avenue R. The suspected drug dealer who opened fire at deputies as they entered the mobile home was also killed in the battle.

He was a seven-year member of the Sheriff's Department and a longtime resident of the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

Hammack was well-known for his love of sports and children and his constant work in trying to keep youngsters out of gangs, off drugs and away from trouble.

Those who worked with him say his goal was to work with the child abuse unit so that he could be more active in protecting the children of the Antelope Valley.

``It would tear him apart to see a child hurting,'' said Detective Steve Lankford of the Palmdale sheriff's station who transferred to the Antelope Valley with Hammack. ``Richard was a man who cared deeply about the community in which he lived.''

Saturday's event was held at the activity center named after Hammack two months after his death.

Officials held a basketball game between sheriff's deputies and firefighters after the presentation in honor of Hammack's love of sports.

Hammack is the only Antelope Valley law-enforcement officer to be slain in more than 80 years.

Lancaster Town Constable Herbert Glidden was shot to death in 1920 when he jumped on the running board of a car occupied by two out-of-town robbers. Townsfolk armed with hunting rifles went after the criminals, killing one and capturing the other.

Three other law enforcement personnel have died in car crashes: deputies Gregory Low and Charles Plumleigh died after a 1978 Lancaster crash on their way to an emergency call. Forensic specialist Rosemary Iris May died in a 1984 crash in Lancaster.
