3D Systems Corp., Valencia, Calif., has introduced Amethyst amethyst (ăm`əthĭst) [Gr.,=non-drunkenness], variety of quartz, violet to purple in color, used as a gem. It is the most highly valued of the semiprecious quartzes.  stereolithography The first 3D printing technology, which was pioneered by Chuck Hull of 3D Systems. Amethyst SL epoxy was developed for making patterns and master models to provide the best surface finish and create finely detailed structures. Pat terns made with the Amethyst SL material can be used in place of wax models for investment casting of precious metals to produce custom jewelry in small quantities. Amethyst SL material is used with the 3D Systems Viper SLA (1) (StereoLithography Apparatus) See 3D printing.
