SKY MobileMedia, Inc., a leading provider of software platforms for the wireless industry, today announced the availability of the SKY-MAP(TM) 2.0 mobile applications software platform and multimedia framework running on Freescale Semiconductor's i.MX21 multimedia applications processor to form a complete Linux-based multimedia solution for the mobile and converged consumer electronics markets. The solution is modem and air interface agnostic, meaning it can be connected to modem technologies from a variety of manufacturers and operate on networks ranging from GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) The first high-speed digital data service provided by cellular carriers that used the GSM technology. GPRS added a packet-switched channel to GSM, which uses dedicated, circuit-switched channels for voice conversations.  to UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) The GSM implementation of the 3G wireless phone system. Part of IMT-2000, UMTS provides service in the 2 GHz band and offers global roaming and personalized features.  to CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band.  or even WiFi. Freescale and SKY plan to demonstrate the integrated solution at the 3GSM Exhibition in Barcelona, Spain February 13-16 in Freescale's booth located in Hall 8, booth #37.

Freescale's i.MX21 multimedia applications processor, with an integrated MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs). 4 hardware codec (1) (enCOder/DECoder) A hardware circuit that performs analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) and digital-to-analog (DAC) conversion. When analog signals are entered into a computer, cellphone or other device via a microphone or video source such as VHS tape or analog TV,  for crisp video quality, is an optimal platform for high-volume, feature-rich cell phones and other mobile handheld devices. The i.MX21 processor is architected with Smart Speed(TM) technology, an intelligent integrative approach that uses hardware accelerators to offload the CPU CPU

, and a crossbar switch to bring parallelism to the system. The result is the i.MX21 processor delivers a vivid mobile multimedia experience without draining the battery for performance that lasts and lasts.

As the industry's most portable wireless multimedia software platform, SKY-MAP 2.0, along with the i.MX21 hardware platform, enables the creation, editing, playing, streaming, and sharing of multimedia content on nearly any mobile device. The integrated SKY-MAP plus i.MX21 solution provides handset manufacturers and application developers unprecedented opportunities for innovation, enabling web browsing, instant messaging, E-mail, MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) An enhanced transmission service that enables graphics, video clips and sound files to be transmitted via cellphones. Developed as part of the 3GPP project, MMS phones are generally backward compatible with SMS and EMS. , advanced multimedia-enabled IMS (1) See IP Multimedia Subsystem.
