SKY COURIER'S NEW GROUND CONTROL SERVICE OPENS TO CHICAGO BUSINESSES

CHICAGO, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Sky Courier, the same-day air express delivery division of Airborne Express (NYSE: ABF), has introduced Ground Control, a dependable local delivery service with a flexible and competitive rate structure, Airborne announced today. Chicago is the second city to take advantage of Ground Control, as the service made its debut in Los Angeles last summer. Ground Control will expand to other cities this year.
"With Sky Courier's years of experience and impeccable record in fast, reliable deliveries, our decision to offer a local courier service was a logical move," said Donald G. Smith, Sky Courier general manager. "Ground Control offers businesses the same professionalism and innovative automation system that has brought Airborne Express and Sky Courier to the forefront of the delivery service industry. Ground Control's state-of-the-art automation system, which provides tracing capabilities and ensures billing accuracies, gives the service an edge over other local courier companies."
Offering three types of service, Ground Control can match the customer's need for priority. "ASAP" guarantees that packages are delivered to their destination in less than 90 minutes from the time the call is placed. "Rush" provides delivery in under three hours and "Express" gets it there in less than five hours. Chicago customers can call 312-928-2550 or 708-928-2550 to arrange a pick-up.
"We offer one of the most flexible, cost-efficient delivery networks in Chicago," said Julie Cohen, area sales and operations manager for Sky Courier. "Businesses that utilize Airborne Express and Sky Courier services receive sizable discounts on Ground Control deliveries. Ground Control has even customized its service for certain Chicago downtown businesses so that 'ASAP' deliveries within the downtown 'loop' area are made within 30 minutes."
In addition, Ground Control provides lost luggage deliveries for major international airlines.
Ground Control offices also serve as Airborne/Sky Courier Regional Stock Exchange sites. The Regional Stock Exchanges warehouse items, such as sensitive replacement parts, that require immediate delivery. In the Chicago area, Ground Control works with Baxter Diagnostics and St. Jude Hospital to deliver emergency medical equipment to local hospitals. One call placed to Ground Control sends the emergency package directly from the warehouse to the hospital.
While most courier services are asleep at the wheel after business hours and on weekends and holidays, Ground Control (as well as Sky Courier and its warehousing services) is up and running 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Airborne Express is the nation's fastest-growing air express company, serving corporate America with the delivery of time-sensitive letters, documents, small packages and freight throughout the United States with its wide range of products that include next-morning, next-afternoon, second-day and same-day delivery services.
In its fifth decade of international service, Airborne delivers to more than 200 countries worldwide, and is the first transportation company to be ISO 9000 certified at a U.S. location. Airborne's Chicago-area operations and Seattle headquarters achieved ISO 9000 certification in November 1992.
