SKOOG TAKES THE REINS AT ENGLISH NATIONAL BALLET.


English National Ballet English National Ballet, founded in 1950 as the "Festival Ballet" inspired by the then imminent Festival of Britain, is one of the leading ballet companies in the United Kingdom founded by Alicia Markova and Anton Dolin, with the financial backing of Polish impresario Julian  has appointed the Swedish-born, 44-year-old Matz Skoog to take over as artistic director in August. He replaces Derek Deane, who recently announced he would step down when his contract expires then. Trained at the Royal Swedish Ballet King Gustav III founded the ballet in 1773. Sources

 School, Skoog was accepted in 1975 into the Royal Swedish Ballet, where he rose to the rank of principal. In 1979, he joined London Festival Ballet (now English National Ballet) and performed with the company for twelve years. He danced every major role in the company's repertoire and created several leading roles in such works as Sphinx sphinx (sfĭngks), mythical beast of ancient Egypt, frequently symbolizing the pharaoh as an incarnation of the sun god Ra. The sphinx was represented in sculpture usually in a recumbent position with the head of a man and the body of a lion,  (Tetley), and Swansong (Bruce). He left the stage in 1991 to concentrate on staging works and guest teaching around the world, and he has served as artistic director of the Royal New Zealand Ballet The Royal New Zealand Ballet is based in Wellington, New Zealand. New Zealand Ballet was established in 1953 as an independent charitable trust by Royal Danish Ballet Principal Poul Gnatt, Beryl Nettleton,
 since 1996.
