There will be no Cigar-Skip Away rematch in the Breeders' Cup Classic The Breeders' Cup Classic is a Grade 1 Weight for Age thoroughbred horse race for 3 years old and older run at a distance of 1¼ miles (2012 m) on dirt. It is held annually at a different racetrack in the United States or Canada as part of the Breeders' Cup. .

Skip Away's trainer, Sonny Hine, remained in a Lexington, Ky., hospital Tuesday as the deadline passed for paying one-third of the $480,000 supplemental fee for the Oct. 26 race.

By missing the deadline, the 3-year-old colt - who beat Cigar earlier this month in the Jockey Club Gold Cup The Jockey Club Gold Cup, established in 1919, is a prestigious thoroughbred flat race open to horses of either gender three-years-old and up. It is typically the main event of the fall meeting at Belmont Park, just as the Belmont Stakes is of the spring meeting and the Travers  and also won the Woodbine woodbine, name for several vines, among them honeysuckle and Virginia creeper.

``My husband hasn't seen the horse since Saturday morning,'' said Carolyn Hine, who owns the horse. ``He is a hands-on trainer, he's always there when the horse has worked. Anything the horse has done, he's been there. He's not going to make a rash decision.

``He said to me, `I don't want to run him.' I said, `That's fine, you call the shots, you're the trainer.' ''

and entered the hospital last Saturday. Skip Away's workouts for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday had to be postponed and Hine never got to see the horse work before the deadline expired.

Hine needed to pay the supplemental fee because the original breeder of Skip Away didn't pay a $500 fee when the horse was born.

The decision denies fans a chance to see a rematch between Skip Away and Cigar, who had won 17 of 18 before losing in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. It will also likely take Skip Away out of the running for Horse of the Year honors.

``I don't think he was disappointed,'' Pete Johnson, the assistant to Hine, told the Thoroughbred Times publication. ``He'd made his mind up he wanted to go because of the horse, not himself. (Skip Away) was just one step from the main pinnacle. It's a shame he can't take that next step.''

 a rematch.

``I really think I could beat him,'' he said. ``I think he had the absolutely perfect trip in the Gold Cup and Cigar had a less than ideal trip. Skip Away probably ran the race of his life and I don't think those scenarios would play out again. Basically, I think Cigar is a better horse.''

``It wasn't a match race,'' Hine said. ``I'm not on any ego trip and we're not greedy. The horses come first.''
