, the late entry in the 15th annual Skins Game, struggled on opening day, recording the only two bogeys and making just one of eight first-round birdies at Rancho La Quinta.

But he also hit one of the best shots of the first nine holes, getting a near 40-foot birdie chip to within an inch on the 12th hole, a par 3, as the tournament opened on the back nine.

``This is an event I didn't think I would play in. This is for the Woods, the Lehmans, the Couples. I'm just flattered to be asked,'' Duval said.

Rookie chances: The last rookie to win the Skins Game was Payne Stewart in 1991, but the odds are with the first-timers this year, since Lehman, O'Meara and Duval are all Skins rookies.
