SKI-&-STAY PACKAGES MAKE SKIING AFFORDABLE.

Skiing can be an expensive hobby, and many resorts offer special packages or special discounts to make the sport more affordable. Here are some of the best ski values we've found so far this year:

Northstar-at-Tahoe near North Lake Tahoe offers one night's lodging and a lift ticket starting at $69.50 per person per day, double occupancy, with a two-night minumum. At Northstar, college students pay $31 (regular price is $43) for lift tickets Sunday through Friday through the season, with some restrictions. Information: (916) 562-1010.

 in Tahoe City is offering a night's lodging, breakfast and either an all-day lift ticket or a beginner lift, lesson and rental package starting at $64 per person, double occupancy. Information: (800) 543-3221.

Kirkwood lodges at South Lake Tahoe offer a night's lodging and a lift ticket starting at $59 per person midweek except for holidays. Information: (800) 967-7500.

The Tahoe North Visitors & Convention Bureau offers three-night ski packages that include three days of skiing starting at $229 per person, double occupancy; packages are valid seven days a week. Midweek ski packages (valid Sunday through Thursday night) are priced from $54 per person per night, double occupancy; one day's skiing is included. Information: (800) 824-6348.

Colorado

Copper Mountain Resort, 75 miles west of Denver, offers a night's lodging and a day's skiing from April 7 through closing starting at $59 per person, double occupancy. The resort also offers free skiing for beginners Jan. 2 through end of season, except Feb. 17-19 and March 9-24. Information: (800) 458-8386.

Vail/Beaver Creek Reservations has family packages at local resorts that include round-trip air fare from Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  for two adults and two children, four nights' lodgings, three-day lift tickets for each skier, children's equipment rental and a rental car for five days starting at $1,690 from Jan. 7 through Feb. 13. Telluride Telluride (tĕl`yərīd), town (1990 pop. 1,309), seat of San Miguel co., SW Colo., on the San Miguel River in the San Juan Mts., inc. 1887.  offers packages that include a night's lodgings plus lift tickets for two adults starting at $45 per night per person for a condominium, $52.50 for a hotel room and $62.50 for a b&b.  Inn in Steamboat Springs Steamboat Springs, town (1990 pop. 6,695), Routt co., NW Colo., on the Yampa River, just W of the Park Range; founded 1875, inc. 1907. Winter Park Resort Winter Park Resort is an alpine ski resort in Winter Park, Colorado in the Rocky Mountains. Located just off U.S. Highway 40, the resort is about an hour and a half's drive from Denver, Colorado.  offers three nights' lodging and two days' skiing starting at $166 per person or five nights' lodging and four days' skiing from $293 per person. Howelsen Ski Area The Howelsen ski area is a small ski area located on Howelsen Hill in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. As such, it is not a typical downhill ski area, but is solely used for Winter Sports and Olympic snow events. It has one chair lift,one rope tow and one Poma lift.  in Steamboat Springs offers skiing between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily for $2 and a season pass for kids 12 and younger for $10. Powderhorn Ski Resort in Grand Junction Grand Junction, city (1990 pop. 29,034), seat of Mesa co., W Colo., at the junction of the Gunnison and Colorado rivers; inc. 1891. The shipping and processing center of a large ranch and irrigated farm region, it also serves the area's uranium, oil shale, gas, and  is selling Powderhorn Cards that entitle adults to weekday lift tickets for $20 from Jan. 1 to March 1 and $15 from March 18 to closing. Other benefits include two free weekday tickets, four coupons for discounted companion tickets, ski school A ski school is an establishment that trains skiers. The modern version of the ski school was invented by the Austrian ski pioneer Hannes Schneider in the early 1920s when he formalized instruction methods and established these methods as teaching principles for all ski instructors  and rental discounts. Idaho

Best Western Wallace Inn in Wallace offers a $134 package that includes a night's lodging, two days of skiing at Lookout Pass Lookout Pass (el. 4425 ft.) is a mountain pass in the Rocky Mountains on the border between Idaho and Montana traversed by Interstate 90.

Best Western Rocky Mountain Lodge Mountain Lodge was once the alternate summer residence of the Governor of Hong Kong since 1900. It was located on Victoria Peak on the Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong. Nevada

Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort & Casino in Incline Village offers a night's lodging and a day's skiing at a choice of Diamond Peak, Northstar-at-Tahoe or Squaw Valley Squaw Valley, valley, NE Calif., in the Sierra Nevada Mts., NW of Lake Tahoe. A well-known ski and winter recreational resort, it was the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. The Squaw Valley Ski Resort in Olympic Valley, California, is one of the largest and most high-concept ski areas in the United States, and was the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics.

New Mexico

Sipapu in Vadito offers dorm rooms starting at $8.50 a night and cabins beginning at $39. A night's lodging plus a lift ticket, based on double occupancy, costs $39.99 per person Sundays through Thursday from Jan. 3 through March 31.

Santa Fe Ski Area offers $53 packages for new skiers that include an all-day lesson, beginner's lift ticket and equipment rental. Information: (800) 776-7669.

Enchanted Forest Cross County near Red River offers a descending rate for skiers. Cost is $9 per day for adults and $2 a day for kids 12 and under; for each consecutive day of skiing, an adult trail pass goes down $1 and the fourth day is free. The resort also offers a $6 afternoon half-day rate for adults and a $1 half-day rate for kids. Information: (505) 754-2374.

Hotel Santa Fe in Santa Fe offers a $73 package that includes one night's lodging, one lift ticket for use at Santa Fe Ski Basin, breakfast and 10 percent off a massage. Price is per person, double occupancy, valid Dec. 31-April 7. Information: (800) 210-6440. ?Oregon

Mount Bachelor in Bend offers the Inside Edge card, which gives the first day's skiing free (if purchased before Jan. 7) and up to 35 percent savings on lift tickets. The card price is based on age: $59 for skiers age 18-64, $49 for students 13-17, $39 for children 7-12 and for seniors 65 and older. Information: (800) 829-2442.

Utah

Village Resorts' Park City properties offer midweek ski vacation packages featuring free transfers to Park City from Salt Lake City Airport, a $37 savings. At Silver King, costs start at $332 per person, quad occupancy. All Seasons' package starts at $301 per person, based on eight occupants. Silver Cliff's package is $262 per person, based on six people. All packages include three nights' lodgings and two ski lift tickets at Park City Ski Area. Information: (800) 331-8652.
