Monday at Mountain High and other nearby ski resorts, attracting droves of Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  families to the slopes.

With the Christmas holiday week in full swing, tickets at Mountain High were sold out by 11 a.m. Skiers and snowboarders waited in lines 20 deep for as long as 1 1/2 hours to buy passes and half an hour to get on lifts.

``It's like Disneyland except colder,'' said Zac Bell of Northridge, who was learning to snowboard for the first time and came to Mountain High to warm up for his big trip to Mammoth next week.

``The weather is awesome. It's clear. It's a good temperature. Everyone seems to be having a good time.''

John McColly, spokesman for Mountain High, is looking forward to a splendid season and to tickets being sold out every day from now until early January.

``We've already gotten more than half of the snow we received all of last year,'' he said, thanks to the return of the El Nino weather pattern. ``This holiday season is going to be pretty big, one with lots of snow.''

El Nino dumped a record 310 inches of snow at Mountain High during the 1997-98 season. Although this year's version is milder, meteorologists Atmospheric scientists

Brad Farmer, spokesman for Big Bear Mountain Resorts, said Monday that conditions were perfect. ``You really could not ask for anything better before the holiday than what we have got right now,'' Farmer said.

So taken with the snow was Brittney Weaver, 8, of Irvine, that she tasted the icicles.

``I want to take a bucket and put it in my dad's hat. I can turn them into icicles and eat them,'' she said.

``This is their first day of vacation. They are here celebrating - celebrating release from school, two weeks of freedom,'' said Volterra, a public-school teacher.

All four of their youngsters, who go to school together and learned to surf together, were taking snowboard lessons for the first time while their mothers captured the moment with a camera and video recorder See DVR, DVD-R and DVD drives. .

For children learning to snowboard or ski for the first time at Mountain High, technology has made learning easier this year.

In the past, children had to trudge up the bunny slopes after they landed at the bottom. Now, there are two ``magic carpets'' - conveyer belts that transport skiers and snowboarders to the top of the slopes.

, which boasts its own sport shop, rentals and tickets windows, and a large indoor activity area.

To appeal to families, Big Bear Mountain Resorts also has redesigned Snow Summit, reducing freestyle terrains to cater to mainstream skiers and snowboarders with children. Bear Mountain remains youth-oriented.

Outside the ski resorts, plenty of free fun was available on the campgrounds in the Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. Valencia residents Melissa Cuellar and her husband brought their children and their children's friends to Apple Tree Campground less than a mile down from Mountain High to ride on saucers.

They were joined by a dozen families at the popular playground, where snowboarding, sledding and snow fights were in full swing.

Children's laughter echoed in the serene landscape graced with tall majestic pines dusted with snow.

``With the snow in the trees, it's picture perfect,'' said Alison Cuellar, who squealed with laughter as she and her friend landed on their back as they slid down a gentle slope.

``The cold doesn't matter. It's the snow!''
