SK Telecom to Build 3G System with Starent Networks' Gateway.

SK Telecom has selected Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. to build the data core network for Korea's first Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA See WCDMA. ) network using the Samsung Mobile Access Gateway 400 (SMAG SMAG Supply Management Activity Group

 400 which is Starent Networks Corporation's ST16 Intelligent Mobile Gateway). The gateway will be deployed as the network's Gateway GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) The first high-speed digital data service provided by cellular carriers that used the GSM technology. GPRS added a packet-switched channel to GSM, which uses dedicated, circuit-switched channels for voice conversations.  Support Node (GGSN) and Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN).

SK Telecom has over 17.6 million subscribers on its CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band. 2000 and 2nd generation networks, and is one of the world's most innovative mobile carriers. It received a license to launch W-CDMA 3G mobile phone services from the South Korean government in March of 2001.

The deployment of the GGSN and the SGSN - SGSN is jointly developed with Samsung - is the first for both products. Live trials have already started on the SK Telecom network. Starent Networks has already deployed Packet Data Serving Node The Packet Data Serving Node, or PDSN, is a component of a CDMA2000 mobile network. It acts as the connection point between the Radio Access and IP networks. This component is responsible for managing PPP sessions between the mobile provider's core IP network and the mobile  (PDSN PDSN Packet Data Serving Node (Nortel Networks)

) and Home Agent (HA) equipment in Asia, North America and South America.
