Elephant experts argued for and against the two-acre exhibit this week before Los Angeles Zoo commissioners. Next week, the mayor is expected to review an independent study on elephant quarters at the zoo.

``The buck has to stop here - from what I've seen, the new elephant exhibit is phenomenal.''

The new Elephants of Surin exhibit would be four times larger than the current exhibit. In addition to a larger yard, the elephants would share a filtered lake, wading pond and waterfall.

``That an elephant can simply stand there, and purportedly represent other elephants in the wild, is simply tragic.''

Zoo defenders such as the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, a fundraiser for the zoo, argued that zoo elephants promote awareness and conservation in the wild.
